They really weren't terribly well-designed experiments and their "results" aren't actually regarded as valid, but their notoriety has earned them a place in introductory psych courses. Most professors take the time to debunk the studies and point out the flaws in the experimental design (uncontrolled variables, unsupported assumptions, misleading operational definitions, etc.), but that hasn't stopped the general public and popular media from embracing these "studies" as valid and relevant. There are actually several other similarly famous and over-valued studies which get mentioned fairly often by popular media.
