The hunt for Forrest Fenn's $2 million hidden treasure
The treasure is SOMEWHERE in the Rocky Mountains. The Rocky Mountains cover a lot of territory in several states. The clues are pretty ambiguous.

Seeking the Hidden Treasure of the Rocky Mountains
Very intriguing story. I interpret the "too far to walk" clue as a one-way distance of at least 8.5 miles (17 miles rt). In other words, it's a bit more than a casual hike unless you're one of those long distance hikers who think nothing of forty miles in a day. But this guy was pretty old when he hid the treasure, so he pretty much for sure used a horse to carry the box which means he stuck to trails or very easy cross country routes. The problem is that the ambiguous clues could fit hundreds of locations throughout the Rocky Mountains. Like most mountain ranges repeating geographical patterns will be found throughout the range which match the basic clues, thus making it very difficult to determine the precise location of the treasure.

Still Searching for the Mojave’s Lost River of Gold
This article contains some interesting info about the Mojave Desert region.
In 1933, a number of scattered newspaper articles appeared across Southern California extolling the grandeur and beauty of some recently discovered massive limestone caves within the Mojave’s Providence Mountains near the old Bonanza King Mine. Known today as Mitchell Caverns, these geological wonders were named after Jesse E. “Jack” Mitchell who had initially explored the caves in 1929 and would later market them into a popular recreational destination accessible from the National Trails Highway, better known as Route 66.

There may be some interesting artifacts out in the desert around Trona, but probably nothing that could be called a treasure. In any case, removing any relics or artifacts from public lands is strictly prohibited by law. There may be a market for such things, but anyone caught dealing in that kind of thing could find themselves in a heap of trouble!

People are searching for elusive treasure a multi-millionaire claims he hid
People are getting closer, but some people are foolish and do stupid things in the search for the treasure, resulting in a few dead bodies along the way.
