Mojave Desert Sage (Salvia dorrii)
It's evergreen and is supposed to only grow to 3 ft by 3 ft, but the one in this pic is much larger:

What I need are some nice shrubs that won't die a few months after I plant them. I don't like oleanders or Texas rangers and that's all I seem to see most of the time. All I'm asking for is something attractive and not generic that will survive!

Drought tolerant California lilac with amazing Blue flowers
Not sure if this one can handle the desert heat, but it might be worth a try.

panamint_patty: I have a friend who has a bunch of ruellias in her backyard. She usually calls them wild petunias. I love the purple flowers!

Harvesting Salvia Pachyphylla seeds
This guy shares a tip about collecting seeds from this shrub in the mint family.
