twister: Great info! Now all you have to do is hunt down some seeds! Then again it's one thing to get them to sprout another to keep them alive long enough to grow into established plants.
Las Vegas Buckwheat at the Springs Preserve Gardens This would be a great one to include in yards around Ridgecrest and Trona. Very colorful and well-adapted to the local climate.

tronagirl: I wonder how well that app does without flowers and on different plants. It probably is easily confused, I'd imagine. A really good plant identification app should be able to identify a plant based on leaf shape, flower bud shape, and other features and not only work when a plant is in bloom. Maybe eventually it will be possible to take a tiny plant sample and get a quick DNA identification.

Eventually there will be a little gizmo you stick a tiny piece of the plant into and it will automatically analyze the DNA of the plant and tell you exactly what it is.

Arrowleaf balsamroot This is an interesting plant with a huge root and pretty flowers.
