TJUSD Board Meeting - January 10, 2019

Postby blackturtle.us » Fri Jan 11, 2019 2:19 pm

The meeting this evening was very short, maybe a little more than a half hour. Very few community members were in attendance, just the husband of a board member and a student who gave a report to the board. Otherwise all in attendance were board members or employees of the district. Highlights as follows:

1) Board Member Comments - Update given on Trona Care activities and list of houses to be demolished. The list contains as many as twenty properties at this time including the burnt out apartment building next to the former Desert Rose Inn (aka, Pinnacle Inn). Trona Care is working with county code enforcement on this project.

2) TTA Report - Two issues reported: 1) Playground safety suggestion regarding manufacturer documentation relevant to safe usage of equipment. 2) Travel expense suggestion related to people who have non-traditional eating habits.

3) Superintendent - 1) Talked about transition at elementary. Principal of over thirty years retired at end of December. The duties of the elementary principal are now being covered by three people on a rotational basis. 2) ALICE training - Six district employees will attend active shooter training in Hanford, CA. The rest of staff will receive training locally in the not too distant future.

4) Retiree Payout - Retirement bonus to be paid.

5) Resignation - Paraprofessional retirement.

6) Coaches - Board approved coaches for four sports.

7) Travel Policy - Discussion. Board members will study proposed policy, propose changes, and approve at future meeting. Specifically the issue to be dealt with is employee food costs incurred while on trips for the district.

8) Royalties and Enrollment: December royalty check: $349k. Current enrollment k-12: 305 students. (The lowest year was 2013 with 247 students.)

NEXT REGULAR MEETING: February 14th

What Does Diversity Have to Do with Science?
It would seem that the liberal agenda is more important than scientific advancement. Would you prefer a "diverse" surgeon or a competent, well-trained surgeon to perform an operation on yourself or a loved one?

Teachers in Los Angeles strike for the first time in 30 years
A nurse at every school? Most schools I know of either don't have nurses or share nurses.

wildrose: It's gotta be hard to make it in LA on a teacher's salary. Even two teachers living together might have a tight budget. Teachers have got to be paid more. They deserve it and most people grossly underestimate the amount of work they do.

Sixth grade teacher facing charges for allegedly assaulting students and cursing at them in class
Kids that age can be a major pain in the ass and I don't blame her for "assaulting" them. Most of them need a good beating anyways!

sandman: There's no doubt that many kids would most definitely benefit from a good beating every now and then. Especially in that age range. Some of those kids have no common sense. I'm not sure if calling them stupid retards is productive even if some of them are stupid retards. In all seriousness though, teachers shouldn't be mistreating kids even when kids deserve such treatment. However there should be serious consequences available to persaude kids to behave themselves for their own good and to help teachers not get to the point where they even feel like doing anything unprofessional.

Outrage Over High School Dance Invitation Using Nazi Salute
Why does something as insignificant as this even become news? The kids were just joking around. Leave them alone!

MojaveMike: It makes no sense. Such an insignificant and harmless joke is transformed into a national news story, but the Black protesters who made obscene remarks to the Covington Catholic High School students are practically ignored. The news media is seriously out of touch with reality!
