Caltrans realigns Towne Pass :4x4:
A little heads-up for those planning on traveling to Death Valley! BTW, this project has a cost of 2.5 million dollars!!!
Construction is scheduled to work 24 hours a day during the week of March 27th – March 30th. Drivers should anticipate one way traffic control with flaggers stopping traffic and a pilot car. Delays should not be more than 15 minutes. After March 30th, drivers will be rerouted to an unpaved surface with reduced speeds until the end of April.

Concerns grow over volcanic eruptions
This article is over a year old, but it's interesting and gives us all something to worry about... just don't worry too much. This article also contains an interesting explanation of phreatomagmatic eruptions, just in case you're not familiar with that term!
:thumb:
The first paper looked at the Ubehebe Crater (you-bee-HE-bee) at the northern end of California's Death Valley. It's about half a mile wide and 700 feet deep. It was long believed to have been caused by a volcanic eruption sometime in the past 10,000 years or so. However, researchers recently looked at beryllium in the rocks and were able to date the last series of eruptions to just 800 years ago. They say the ingredients necessary for another eruption are all still there.

Death Valley wildfire closes Scotty’s Castle
No structures were damaged according to this news article, but the site will be closed for at least a few days.
A wildfire in Death Valley National Park has forced the closure of popular Scotty's Castle. The fire erupted Monday and the visitor center has been closed, tours have been canceled, and power and phone service is out. Park spokeswoman Cheryl Chipman says the structure wasn't threatened because winds blew the flames away.

Wildfire Skirts Scotty's Castle At Death Valley National Park
Hopefully things will be open and back to normal in the near future!
:4x4:
Park officials say Scotty’s Castle is closed indefinitely until water and power are restored to the area. Bonnie Clair Road is closed between the junction of Big Pine Road and three miles east of the Castle. The remainder of the park remains open to visitors. There is no damage to the Castle itself.

Organ pipes to usher in summer at Scotty's Castle
Looks like one of the dates has already passed and the other one is today! Not sure if it's quite worth the drive, but it does sound like a neat event.
The public is invited for a rare chance to hear the pipe organ at legendary Scotty's Castle in Death Valley National Park Friday, June 21, the first official day of summer, and Saturday, June 22. This is the one and only times of year that hands touch the organ, with this year's player Ty Woodward.

Meteorologist Heading To Death Valley On Sunday In Hope To Record Hottest Temperature In The World
Looks like this summer could be a record-breaker as far as heat goes. We'll just have to see! :diablo:
TheWeatherSpace.com Senior Meteorologist Kevin Martin has announced that he will be heading to the hottest place in the world – Death Valley, California. Temperatures over 130F are forecast for the area, and a record might fall. On July 10, 1913, Death Valley’s Furnace Creek recorded a temperature of 134F. This is said to be the hottest temperature officially recorded on Earth. Now, 100 years later; Martin will try to see history repeat itself.

Heat beats down in Death Valley
It got close, but it didn't make it to a new record yesterday! This news clip talks a little about the record and how people react to the heat. It also features a ranger by the name of Snow, which seems like an odd name for a ranger working at the hottest spot on the planet!

Sweating for Survival: Extreme Runners Race 135 Miles Through Death Valley :diablo:
This is an interesting event, but it's a little extreme. I suppose it's better for people to be extreme this way than to be extreme religious nuts or ideological zealots! Just the same I say moderation in everything and there's nothing moderate about this event!
:cactus:
It is the start of the AdventureCORPS Badwater 135, an ultramarathon, which begins in Badwater and ends halfway up Mount Whitney, where the road ends and the trail to the peak begins. The qualifying 96 athletes have 48 hours to run 135 miles through desert, valleys and three mountain ranges, in some of the most extreme conditions of any race in the world.

Finding of No Significant Impact - Death Valley Wilderness and Backcountry Stewardship Plan
Visiting DVNP just got a bit more complicated. Depending on what you want to do there may be permits required and lots of restrictions! Click on the link and download the report! It's pretty long and there are a lot of details that I'm not even going to attempt to summarize!
