TJUSD Board Meeting - August 08, 2013

Postby blackturtle.us » Thu Aug 08, 2013 6:31 pm

The board meeting this evening last a little over an hour. During the meeting a student who had recently graduated from high school was recognized. Punch and cookies were served. A small number of community members stayed for the entire meeting.

A. Superintendent's Report - Mr. Olney shared several items of interest with the school board.
1) Governing Board Handbook 2013/2014 - Mr. Olney passed out a copy of this handbook to each board member and quickly summarized its contents.
2) Gymnasium - The floor in the high school gym is buckling and corrective measures are being taken to fix this problem.
3) 7th Grade orientation to be held 6pm on August 13th in the HS Library.
4) Misc - Olney shared several items pertaining to several topics including a tax bond payment issue which might result in the district receiving a small sum of unexpected funds, a couple upcoming compliance reviews, test score information, new math framework for high school, internet upgrade still expected in September, and a couple other items.

B. School Site Council - One for the entire district. Olney talked about difficulties of putting together separate councils for the elementary and high school.

C. New Bus - A new bus will be purchased by the district at a cost of $173k. However, most of the cost ($155k) will be paid for by a transportation grant. Sandy Sprouse (retired bus driver, now school board member) asked a question about alternators and air conditioning. Mark Goins (head of maintenance and transportation) said that the bus is equipped with heavy duty alternators. Sandy Sprouse also volunteered to take the bus on a test drive.

D. High School Painting - During the process of repainting the high school, a mural in the high school quad was inadvertently painted over. The school will receive compensation for this error.

E. Inter-District Transfers were granted to three students.

$173,000 for a bus? How is that possible? It should be possible to purchase four buses for that much! Someone is making a heck of a lot of money off of public schools by over-charging for buses! Of course, that's true to textbooks, computer software, and everything else that public schools require in order to operate!

Private companies always overcharge public entities. Whether it's public school, the military, law enforcement, or you name any other governmental organization, private companies make big bucks off of them and guess who ultimately pays for it? That's right! Us tax-payers! Billions of dollars are wasted and wind up making some sleazeball rich in the process! That's capitalism for ya!!!

SCHOOL IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!
Hooray!!! :talk:
This means fewer kids at stores and hanging around with nothing productive to do! Is there anyway we can lengthen both the school year and the school day in order to keep the little cretins occupied?!!

The unofficial end of summer begins Tuesday, Aug. 13 with the start of school for students in the Sierra Sands District system. The first day of school can be a scary experience, especially for those attending a new school. Murray and Monroe middle schools are trying to make the transition for sixth graders transferring from elementary to middle school as smooth as possible.

Tax free!!! I wonder if that applies to everything or just school supplies. I'd go on a little shopping spree if they had a tax free weekend here in Cali!

Anyone else notice that the DAILY INSUFFICIENT has more pop up ads than a porn site? I tried reading these articles and right in the middle of reading one of them a full screen ad popped on. And that's not to mention the pop up ads that appear each time I clicked a link! And they say that porn sites are sleazy... I'd say that the DAILY INSUFFICIENT website out sleazes the porn sites by a long shot!

Tech Minute: Back-to-school gadgets
Handy gadgets or unnecessary expenses? The note-taking system could be useful, but I doubt that it will search by keyword very effectively if your penmanship is not all that great.
