TJUSD Board Meeting - October 10, 2013

Postby blackturtle.us » Thu Oct 10, 2013 8:00 pm

The meeting this evening lasted one hour and forty-five minutes. Lots of important information was presented.

Superintendent's Report - Mr. Olney reported that Searles Valley Minerals donated $500 dollars to the AVID program. He also announced that the Parent Project will be offered sometime during December or January. He explained that October 14 and November 1 are staff inservice days and the topic to be dealt with is the Core Curriculum State Standards (CCSS). He talked some about the current transition going on throughout the state (and much of the nation) in which schools are implementing the many aspects of CCSS.

Public Comments: Curtis Boutte (high school football coach) informed the board as to how the football season is going so far. Although he is pleased with the team's win-loss record (5-0), he stated that he is even more proud that so far the entire team has been academically eligible to play all games.

Royalty Update - Legislation has passed which has reduced royalty rates from five percent to four percent. This will remain in effect for two years.

LEA Plan and the Single Plan for School Achievement (HS and elem) - Mr. Olney presented a detailed overview of the Local Educational Agency Program Improvement Plan and the Single Plan for School Achievement for both the high school and the elementary. He displayed approximately fifty slides during the course of these three presentations and talked about student achievement, changes in curriculum, staff development, community involvement, technology upgrades, etc. After these presentations the board voted to approve all three action plans.

Parent Involvement - Mr. Olney gave a brief overview of steps the district is taking to facilitate parental involvement. Board Policy 6020 and a document (AR 6020) outlining strategies to facilitate parental involvement were discussed at this time. This was an informational item.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING: November 14, 2013, 6PM, District Board Room

It sounds like the football team is doing quite well this year! Hopefully they continue to win and stay eligible. I know that elibibility is often a big problem. Hopefully the boys on the team will continue to work hard when the season is over!

Great public service message! More exercise for kids. Less needless waste of resources. It's all good!

According to the info posted at the link below, the Trona HS football team lost 14-6 to King's Christian. That would make their record 5-1 which is still good, but it ends their undefeated streak.

tronagirl: Walking to school works for kids who live in Trona and kids who live in Pioneer Point, but everyone else lives too far away from the school. Not too many kids from Pioneer Point walk, but a few do ride bikes. Having bus service probably keeps the parking lot from getting jammed from too many parents dropping off and picking up kids!

wildrose: Most kids would rather take the bus than walk. Riding a bike is not as popular as it was back when I was a kid. Kids still have bikes, but they seldom ride them to school as far as I can tell.

Ma & Pa Kettle Math
Here's a fun little video clip that was shown at the teacher inservice on Monday this week. It helped illustrate a point regarding the difference between understanding math concepts and simply being able to memorize the steps used to solve a math problem.

Ma and Pa Kettle. That is some pretty funny stuff there! They seem pretty confident in they way they solve that problem and they have no idea that they are completely wrong. Come to think of it, this world is full of people like that. It may not be a math problem that they get wrong, but they are completely convinced that they are right even when they are totally wrong.

Trona 6th grade Science Camp loses benefactor
It says in the article that the cost per student is $400. That seems like an awful lot! Maybe the school should just not send them!
The annual sixth grade Science Camp for Trona students has been paid for by an anonymous benefactor for more than 20 years. That generous benefactor passed away earlier this year, now the 26 students this year have to raise nearly $9,000 to attend the week-long camp in the San Bernardino mountains above Riverside.

Football Coach Accused of Bullying as Team Crushes With Massive Win 91-0
Some people are a little too quick to make ridiculous accusations. The coach of the winning team had his third string in by half time and he called no time outs. He was doing his best to keep the score down, but even if he wasn't it wouldn't be reasonable to accuse him of bullying. I hate it when people overuse buzzwords like this to attack the character of other people! It's bullying if:
A) Aggressive, attacking behavior
B) Balance of power unequal
C) Consistent - more than one occasion over a period of time (not just one game)
D) Deliberate intention to hurt or harm
