I can't provide documentation for this, but I've been told that our government talked Saudi Arabia into flooding the market with gas in order to drive down prices. The main reason for this was to damage the Russian economy. Between the sanctions and lower gas prices Russia stands to have a difficult time. Gas is their main export and with a reduction in gas revenue they will suffer. The dark side of all this is that Saudi Arabia violates human rights in egregious ways all the time. For instance, they behead people on a routine basis, but we look the other way since they play well with our leaders.

Gas for less than $2 might not be good news :conf2:
It may be bad for the economy in the long run, but it's hard not to like it here and now!

I think the goal is, to hold the price of crude artificially low just long enough to cripple the shale industry and send them back to the "dinosaurs". All done patriotically of course, under the guise of sanctioning Russia!

Why Gas Prices Are Falling
Here's an explanation for the drop in gas prices from Time Magazine. It somehow seems incomplete. Smoke and mirrors, but no actual reason.

The real reason gas prices are falling is because food and water and utilities are so high I don't have money to even keep my cars working and insured let alone put gas in them.

I noticed like in other reports I heard not much time is spent explaining why they are so high. OK low production and low imports sure but why. I pretty sure they, producers, didn't forget it was going to be a summer driving season. And WTF is it production or low imports do they mean they didn't have the supply to fill production orders or they had enough supply but they shut down refineries in the muddle of the summer? Meanwhile a crude (WTI) futures are at $53 a barrel. Current price in TX is $2.50- $2.60

Gas Buddy -- you need this app now
Probably this a lot more useful in a large metropolitan area, but it does seem like it might help save money.

California regulators vote for 10 percent cut to fuel emissions
It may be the case that gas prices have fallen in the last week as is usually the case during the fall, but in the long term here's yet another factor which will cause them to increase.
