Interesting situation brewing up in Bishop. Apparently a teacher posted a picture of a boy holding a fig leaf with the caption "Fuck the Police." Many community members mistook the fig leaf for a marijuana leaf. (It's hard to explain such shear idiocy, but apparently stupid happens.) The district superintendent decided to fire the teacher, claiming that the image was inappropriate and that anyone who would post such material is unfit to work as a teacher in his district. Obviously, the community became outraged over such an arbitrary misuse of power. Although there were those who supported the superintendent (let's just call them idiots), there are more who disagree with his decision (let's call these people Freedom Lovers). So at this point there's lots of arguing between the idiots and the Freedom Lovers and it's hard to say what the eventual outcome of this case will be. Hopefully the Freedom Lovers put the heat on and force the superintendent to resign and the school board to reinstate the teacher! I hate fascists who use their power to stifle free speech. There are little Hitlers like this all over the place and they do not deserve even the slightest iota of respect!

There should be a solid legal wall between a person's social/personal life and a person's professional life. Unless a person is convicted of an actual criminal offense, there should be no way that an employer can fire a person for something that doesn't happen during work hours! The following video discusses exactly this point:
This man will die for your online naked rights
There should be no morality clauses allowed in contracts and employers should not be able to use what employees post online during their personal time as a basis for firing them. Freedom of expression should trump any argument an employer can make to use online postings as a basis for firing an employee. This also applies to teachers and so-called acts of "moral turpitude" or conduct unbecoming of an educator which happens outside of work hours. Like I said there should be a solid legal wall between a person's social/personal life and a person's professional life.

Great points SHADYLADY! There should be a SOLID LEGAL WALL between a person's social/personal life and a person's professional life. Freedom of speech should be held sacred and there should be no compromises made when it comes to Constitutionally protected freedom of expression. Instead what has happened is the constant erosion of basic rights and a capitulation to what might be termed THE LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR OF PARENTAL SENSIBILITIES. Educators are forced to refrain from expressing any ideas that might upset the most cognitively frail individuals in a community. That is anti-intellectualism at it's worse and just a small step short of book-burning and you know what they say about book burning...
Where they have burned books, they will end in burning human beings.

Teachers Under A Morality Microscope
Several cases where teachers have been unfairly fired as a result of off-duty behavior are presented in this editorial which ends with the following conclusion:
We demand a great deal of our public school teachers. They put in long hours in overcrowded classrooms, and yet they receive lower salaries than people in other professions requiring similar education levels.

For this sacrifice, we now demand that they live their lives according to a morality standard set to satisfy the lowest common denominator of parental sensibilities. They live under the transparent conditions of celebrities without any of the benefits, with parental paparazzi eager to catch them in an unguarded moment. They deserve better.

Absolutely! If anything we should be going out of our way to show kids that we really care about our freedoms by protecting the free speech rights of teachers no matter how much complainers complain and whiners whine! That would be like a double win. Not only would kids learn that our Constitution really matters, but we might also get the complainers and whiners to STFU!!!
