University Bans Social Media, Political Content and Wikipedia Pages On Dorm WiFi
Instead of encouraging students to explore different ideas and to engage their minds, this university wants to put blinders on its students. Rather than teaching kids how to avoid offending someone, schools should teach students how to engage people they disagree with in meaningful and thoughtful dialogue. If you focus on not offending other people, then you shy away from bringing challenging ideas to the attention of others and society stagnates as a result. Schools worry too much about making everyone feel welcome by attempting to force students to not say anything that might offend other students. That's the wrong approach to take.
...it seems like the antithesis of what a public university ought to be doing... Turning the filters up to the point when Wikipedia pages are blocked is insane. That site is a go to resource for, well, everyone, but probably especially for students. And the ban on political activism and traffic suggests NIU is turning a blind-eye to the important role that universities have always played in political thought and activism.

Student's Story About Shooting A Pet Dinosaur With A Gun Ends In Suspension, Arrest
This story is even crazier than the previous one. I can sort of see turning a kid caught with alcohol on campus over to the cops. I mean the kid clearly violated a law, but in this story a kid just wrote a story. Is there a law against being overly creative nowadays, or what?
As is the case with most stories involving non-threats being portrayed as threats, those reading Stone's words as a threat removed the context around them. This was quite a feat, considering the teacher who expressed concern to administrators had all the context right in front of her. It's just that she stripped it away when emailing school officials.

As the guy who wrote the article says, this is a case of a writing project "gone stupidly wrong."

Candidates for Trona Unified School District board set
Five candidates and three positions. Looks like two people won't make it. Hopefully there will be more info about the candidates made available at some point!
There are five people running in the election this year. Incumbents Ray Richardson, Trisha Funke and Deana Garrison are running for re-election. Christina Celeya and Christopher Darling have also entered the race to become new members of the board. There are only three positions on the board available, each with a term of four years.

'Unprecedented' virus striking kids
A respiratory virus called Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) has sent a large number of kids to hospitals throughout the midwest and southeast. Hopefully it doesn't spread to California. As if parents don't already have enough to deal with!

wildrose: Will there be some kind of candidate forum where candidates answer questions about issues that the school district is facing. It would be nice to know if the candidates are aware of issues that the educational system is dealing with. How else do we know who is the most qualified?

Moms Put Back-to-School Products to the Test
I only see one of these products as relevant for back-to-school issues, but they are all potentially useful products.

Baby Got Class -- A back to school parody
This is fairly funny, but not 5.4 million in one month funny. I think someone is manipulating the view count on this one!

CoolChick: I have read that there are quite a few ways that people can promote their videos and increase their view count on YouTube. A couple of really popular channels racked up millions of views through use of some service. Probably these people sank a thousand bucks into promoting their video and figure it's a good investment since if they get popular enough they can get paid the big bucks like the Shaytards. Just google Shaytards and you'll see what I mean.
