TJUSD Board Meeting - July 9, 2015

Postby blackturtle.us » Thu Jul 09, 2015 5:48 pm

The board meeting this evening lasted only twenty-five minutes. There was not a lot on the agenda. This was Ms. Jody Rummer's first meeting as interim superintendent and her fourth day working with the district in that capacity.

Meeting Highlights:
1) Substitute Teacher approved for work.
2) Interdistrict transfer approved.
3) Business Services Agreement - The county will provide financial services assistance to help the district deal with financial matters.
4) School Site Council - The district will have a waiver allowing it to have only one school site council instead of three (elementary, high school, district).
5) Principal Job Description - A salary schedule was added to the job description. As of yet there is no set timeline for the selection of the new high school principal, but the position is open.
6) Deadline for superintendent applications is July 20th. Board members will then review applications and decide which ones to interview. A meeting regarding the selection of the superintendent will be held August third.

Next Regular Board Meeting: Thursday, August 13

The real reason eyes go red in swimming pool... hint - it's not chlorine
Anyone planning on going swimming in the community pool? You know, the one run by the school and located by the football field and the elementary school. Well, be warned, if you or someone you know gets red eyes after swimming there (or in any other pool for that matter), it's not the chlorine...

Researchers Prove That Your Eyes Turn Red In Pools Because Of Urine
These people get extremely silly (and a little disgusting) in their prolonged discussion of the risk you take when you go swimming in public swimming pools. Keep in mind that the only public pool in Trona is run by the the school.

CoolChick: Since you brought up the topic of the community pool, I should add that during the board member comments part of the meeting that one of the board members mentioned that she was impressed by how clean the pool was. She said that the facilities were clean and orderly and well-managed. I didn't include this in my initial report since it didn't seem all that important, but in light of your posts, it's probably pertinent.

Things might look clean and tidy, but that says nothing about what's going on in the water. There could be a ton of urine and fecal matter in the water. That's why I say that public pools are like giant toilets! Swim at your own risk!!!

Philosophical discussions boost pupils' maths and literacy progress, study finds
Teaching isolated facts and skills doesn't result in longterm gains because people forget things that are not integrated into their meaning system. Philosophical discussions integrate knowledge into a meaning system which not only provides a mental lattice to connect the knowledge to, but also motivates the student to learn more.
Philosophical discussions about truth, fairness or kindness appear to give a small but significant boost to the maths and literacy progress of primary school pupils, although experts remain puzzled as to why.

More than 3,000 pupils in 48 state primary schools across England took part in a year-long trial as part of a study named “philosophy for children”, and found that their maths and reading levels benefited by the equivalent of two months’ worth of teaching.

Come See How Excited Everyone Is For The Latest UK Educational 'Don't Pirate' Campaign
It's wrong to use the public school system to indoctrinate children to accept the corporate pro-copyright-maximalist position, but in the UK they're going all out and putting together an elaborate propaganda campaign:
We are delighted to have three highly-experienced agencies on board to help us create disruptive and engaging multi-media campaigns that will connect with the aspirations of young people.

Hopefully this turns out to be true:
You just have to beat the buzzwords off with a stick, don't you? Kids aren't going to fall for this crap any more than they fell for the over-the-top anti-marijuana videos they showed my parents. But, hey, keep beating that dead horse if you want. Just keep it down; some of us are innovating over here.

Team of students searches for inspiration at local landfill :pac:
They call themselves the Eco-Derz (short for Ecology and Coders).
