Sheriff Donny Youngblood reveals tactics behind manhunt search
At the end of this clip the commentator asks whether the tactics worked or if they just got lucky. I think it was mostly luck and the fact that the guy they were chasing had limited resources to work with.

They got lucky that he didn't make it out of the county. Then Inyo county would have shot their bird.

For that matter, it wasn't all that far to the San Bernardino county line.

Budget for Manhunt
These kinds of operations ain't cheap! The cost of overtime for all the officers adds up quickly. And then there's the cost of fuel and other necessities.

In the end what caught him was a citizens tip and just a few sheriffs and a few shots.

Whether or not the big operation was necessary is hard to say. It may have been a big waste of money or it may have kept the guy from killing more people. It's impossible to say. However, there's no doubt that it would have been ironic if after all that work the guy had gotten out of Kern County and been apprehended or killed by officers from another county. Of course, in that case the spin would be that the forces in Kern County flushed him out and forced him to take chances leading to apprehension or in this case his death.

In that video the one guys mentions he was a little jumpy for a while afterwords. I believe him. I had driven by that cabin once just a few years later and the people that were occupying it that time did give us a few unfriendly stares. It is located a short ways from a intersection and when I figured out I made a wrong turn I proceeded to turn around at the wide section in the road where the driveway was. Didn't go up the drive way but you know how a road gets a little larger at intersections of any kind.It was a 3 point turn around and when my eyes met the occupants eyes it was not friendly. I actually thought the had the looks of people wanting to hide something. Driven by there a few times and the place is usually vacant.

CrustyOldFart: Thanks for posting something new to this thread. Otherwise I would have never known it exists. It was buried pretty deep! This is a pretty good archive of info about that news story.
