TJUSD Board Meeting - September 10, 2015

Postby blackturtle.us » Fri Sep 11, 2015 8:22 am

The school board meeting only lasted approximately a half hour, but a few important votes were taken. Here’s the rundown on the highlights from my point of view:

Student Representative - A student updated the board on the following student activities: ASB Leadership Camp, Homecoming preparations, Volleyball, etc. She assured the board that the proper permits had been submitted to cover the Homecoming bonfire and T lighting. Also she mentioned that some of the Homecoming Week events would involve themes such as pirates, sharks, etc. Additionally she announced the Homecoming Court.

Board Member Comments: Trisha Funke announced a Trona Care Clean Up Day scheduled for September 26th. She provided additional information about meeting and dumpster locations, event hours, and the free lunch available to those who participated.

Superintendent Comments: Ms. Rummer thanked the board for the time she has spent with the district as Interim Superintendent. She also announced a Data Management Recognition Certificate to be given to the head of Food Service for outstanding work related to student data collection.

Appointment of New Superintendent: The board voted (4-1) to approve Keith Tomes as the new district superintendent. He was given basically a three year contract (September 15, 2015 to June 30, 2018).

Financial Report - Dawn McMillen updated the board on the financial state of the district. She said that the district was financially healthy, had a healthy reserve, and that the budget was balanced, but warned of possible royalty reductions and continued deficit spending.

Royalties for July 2015: $475,665.35 which appears to be the largest single month payout for the last ten or so years.

Next Meeting: Thursday, October 8th, 2015.

Less than 50% of CA students met core standards; how Kern county students stack up
The scores are meaningless. It's the first year of a new test and so there is nothing to compare it to. It's a baseline test. If the scores are lower next year then that's a bad thing and if they are higher next year then that's a good thing. But the scores during the first year don't indicate anything at all except for maybe that this is a harder test than anything used in the past.

The Very Obvious Reason We Have A Teacher Shortage
For the most part what the middle-aged Turks say in this discussion is correct. There are a few little picky factual errors here and there, but the gist of what they say is quite correct.

Schools Are Switching To Gender-Neutral Bathrooms
This is pretty funny in a disgusting sort of way, but as for gender-neutral bathrooms at elementary schools... I don't think so!

Why School Should Only Be 4 Days A Week
I'm willing to bet that almost all kids would be thrilled to have an extra day off each weekend. As for academic improvements noted in the news clip, those would turn into deficits after a few months. At first the novelty would have a positive effect, but over the long run there would be an academic slide once three day weekends became routine.

You hear all this stuff all the time about how this or that is going to change schools, but nothing ever seems to change. Gender neutral restrooms? There will be a few fringe schools that head in that direction, but it won't become something that even a substantial minority of schools do. Four day school week? Don't think so. It ain't happening anytime soon!

14-Year-Old Suspended From School Over Homemade Clock
I can understand the reasoning behind the initial mistake (err on the side of caution, etc.), but to stick with the three-day suspension is just fucking stupid!
:wtf:
Of course, ultimately the kid is the winner one way or the other since he got an invitation to the White House. Definitely makes both school officials and law enforcement officials look like total idiots!

Here's The Ridiculous Texas Law That Allows Law Enforcement To Pretend A Digital Clock Is A Hoax Bomb
Technically the officers involved in the arrest of the teen were within the law, but they were just barely within the law. It took a little bit of paranoid delusion mixed in with the actual circumstances to get to the point where arresting the teen made any sense, but generally law enforcement is allowed a little delusional discretion in situations like this...
Now, if we're going to play along with this statute's wordings, a whole lot of everyday items suddenly become much more "dangerous." Road flares, cell phones, batteries, a box full of wires, a vibrator, a doorbell, a power inverter… basically anything someone might feel could explode or could trigger an explosion would fall under the enormous shadow this statute casts.

Ahmed Mohamed | Teen Arrested for Clock (INTERVIEW)
This kid has his priorities straight. An invite from the president, Google, Twitter, and Facebook is cool, but a chance to go to MIT is a million times better! Especially if it leads to him getting accepted as a student!
