Should America BAN Homework?
No school I've ever heard of gives homework on weekends or holidays. This seems like a lot of griping over nothing to me.

School Districts Are Standing In The Way Of Public School Edtech
Trying to incorporate tech in an organizational model developed in times past probably isn't going to work.
Organizations structured like this often take a top-down, “control” approach to management, based on the Six Sigma model of process improvement. But as I wrote in my 2015 book Personalized Learning Playbook, that is a huge missed opportunity. In an age where not only startups, but established companies, employ increasingly flat management styles, we can do better in managing districts.

Best of Opensource.com: Education
I'm not sure if it's because most teachers are technologically illiterate (sure they can do word processing, internet research, and put together cheesy powerpoint presentations, but that counts for nothing in the real world) or maybe it's because corporations have a stranglehold on the public education system, but it's amazing what a poor job educators and the education system has done when it comes to taking advantage of open source materials. Maybe things will actually start to change in 2016...
The intersection of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), open educational resources (OER), and computer programming is the focus of a number of the articles published on Opensource.com in 2015. They highlight a growing interest in all three areas where students, parents, and educators have the opportunity to immerse themselves in education as never before.

January 04, 2016: Teacher Inservice
This guy and his wife presented the inservice to us teachers here in Trona today. Although he has a black belt in karate, the topic of the inservice was related to standardized testing and common core and that sort of thing. Check out his YouTube channel by clicking the video. He has a lot of views and plenty of subscribers and if you want to learn karate he has a ton of highly rated instructional videos on the subject!

wildrose and pcslim: Techies don't go into teaching for the most part. They get jobs elsewhere. Very few teachers are good with technology and almost none are capable of more than using basic software. Like you point out they can do research on the web, use basic office software, and maybe do some artwork or edit photographic images, but that's about the same level of technological expertise it takes to be a secretary. Nothing against secretaries, but that's the type of job that teachers are most capable of providing the skills for. Engineers, programmers, scientists, and other technical types have to rise above all that with very little support from the typical teacher. It's too bad the educational system can't be reorganized to do a better job, but people to fill the ranks who are capable of more are in short supply as it is and tech companies can't even find enough of them!

mrgreen: High school boys gang raping another high school boy? That's one way of framing the story, but it's actually a hazing story involving anal penetration with a pool stick. Sick and disgusting and technically rape, but that's not likely to be the way the boys saw their behavior at the time. Just the same, such brutal behavior cannot go unpunished and it's their own problem if they wind up on the sex offender registry for life. I don't feel sorry for them, but it's hard to see them as sexual predators, although what they did was probably worse than what the typical sexual predator would have done to the victim in this case, as strange as that may seem to say.

Lego robots scoot into the classroom
Not the most cost-effective way of teaching kids about coding and not even all that engaging. Once the novelty wears off you just have a bunch of gadgets to keep track of and fix when they break. Great gimmick and likely to impress the technologically illiterate, but not something I'd recommend by a long shot.

School's Vegan Approach Has Kids Invested In Eating Well
There's more to life than sustainability and being environmentally friendly, but if that's your thing then you'll probably approve of what this school is doing.

hokey smokes: It would take a very talented chef to get kids to enjoy eating vegetarian style. Even with the garden to increase their sense of involvement, it still ain't gonna cut it unless there's something tasty being cooked up!
