TJUSD Board Meeting - April 14, 2016

Postby blackturtle.us » Fri Apr 15, 2016 12:28 pm

The board meeting this evening lasted a little over an hour. There was a pretty good number of people present at the beginning of the meeting, but the numbers diminished after student awards were presented early in the meeting.

1) Superintendent’s Report - Supt. Keith Tomes provided info on the following topics: a) ROP welding courses for next year are being organized. Equipment is being tested and needed items are being ordered. b) Summer School is in the planning phase. c) PLC (Professional Learning Communities) explained to board with brief overview of how the implementation will work within the district. The most obvious change will be an additional period four days a week at the high school (with time being shaved from other classes). d) LCAP survey to be given to all stakeholders including staff and community.
2) Farewell presentation to Dawn McMillen: History of service, gift, cookies, and punch.
3) One parent spoke during public comments regarding a work experience opportunity provided to her son through the local Elk’s Lodge.
4) Retirement - Three teachers turned in letters of resignation. Their last day of work will be June 4th. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the local teachers’ union for a retirement incentive was ratified with a 4-1 vote. Sandy Sprouse was the only board member to vote against the incentive.
5) Bonus of almost $9000 was paid to Joseph Wolfe who is serving as an Administrative Intern this year and who will serve as high school principal next year. Board President Deana Garrison said that his service went “above and beyond expectations.”
6) Cal STEAM Academy - The board approved a contract agreement with this charter school. A spokesman for the organization promised the district $100k in revenues the first year plus free access to online curriculum for students attending TJUSD, as well as some kind of a scholarship. Deana Garrison expressed some skepticism over the deal, but said she hoped for good results.
7) On-Point Technology - The board approved several invoices with a total cost of $93.4k for installation of equipment in one high school classroom and several elementary classrooms.
8) Handicap Parking - The board directed the district to install three additional handicapped parking spaces in front of the high school. Also they asked that additional spaces be considered at the community pool.

Is ‘Trump Effect’ Increasing Racism in Children’s Schools?
This is more of a BS smear campaign than anything worthy of taking seriously. Often surveys have an obvious agenda and this is a perfect example of that type of survey.

sandman: I tend to agree, but I could see educators who tend to be a little on the liberal side of middle of the road saying negative things about Trump or blaming Trump for things he has nothing to do with. Mostly I see the people who put together the survey as baiting teachers by asking leading questions. They got the results they wanted and that's just BS by design as far as I'm concerned.

Superintendent Jeff Moss to appear before State Ethics Commission over nepotism complaints
There seems to be no shortage of leaders who are willing to abuse their positions in order to do favors for friends and family. Nepotism and cronyism are two of the most common forms of corruption in the USA. There should be better safeguards against this kind of abuse of power.
Beaufort County School District superintendent Jeff Moss will go before the State Ethics Commission in August to discuss the hiring of his wife to a school district job and could face penalties if found guilty of violating S.C. ethics laws.

Poway Superintendent placed on paid leave
This guy is paid half a million per year and they're putting him on paid leave and trying to find a loophole to fire him. Sounds like a legal battle that'll probably wind up with a settlement of a several hundred thousand dollars or maybe even a couple million depending on the length of his contract!

Schools Snooping Student Social Media & Sharing with Police :wtf:
This is nothing more than a gross invasion of privacy. Schools should respect the privacy of students.

mrgreen: Schools should not be used or allow themselves to be used to condition children to accept invasion of their privacy or any other violation of their basic freedoms. No matter what they claim, there is nothing good about this kind intrusion into the private lifes of students. Parents should be especially upset since this is the school taking over their role as parents and to some extent also spying on them.

Teacher Fired For Saying “Vagina"
It seems that a general term like "private parts" would have worked better. The question is how did the topic come up in the first place? Most middle school art classes would not include depictions of nudes. So if she brought up the topic and it wasn't in the book or lesson plans, then her behavior actually was inappropriate. If it was in response to a painting of a flower that some say resembles a vagina, then it would have been appropriate to respond if a student made the observation, but not to push that interpretation on the children in the class. Common sense needs to prevail and from what I can tell, this substitute teacher lacks common sense.
