Fatal off roading accident in desert
The frequency of this sort of thing around here is alarmingly high! Sometimes it's locals and sometimes it's people from out of the area, but either way fatalities and injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to ORV use.

28 Crashes at Silver Lake Sand Dunes
There's actually a second part to this and fyi this is in Michigan. Not exactly local, but it's pretty much the same here as there.

As long as it's adults who die in ORV accidents I don't have a problem, but when kids die the parents should be charged with negligence no matter how careful they claim to be. Kids under sixteen have no business operating motorized vehicles. An exception might be on a family farm in which case I might say thirteen could possibly be a reasonable minimum age.

twister: By the same token, law enforcement officers who see kids riding illegally and do nothing -- something that happens all the time in Searles Valley -- should also be charged with negligence. I agree that parents should be more responsible, but when local sheriffs turn a blind eye, they are also culpable for any deaths which may happen to occur.

tronagirl: That should go double for any traffic incidents which may happen to occur as the result of an unlicensed driver operating an unregistered vehicle on public roads. When you see a kid under eight driving around on a motorcycle, it doesn't take a genius to realize that several laws are being violated and any sheriff who isn't bright enough to figure out that something ought to be done should be relieved of his job immediately. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

ATV Safety
Any parent or law enforcement officer who fails to enforce the law should be subject to criminal as well as civil penalties.
California state law currently requires that all ATV riders under 18 years of age must possess an ATV Safety Certificate or be supervised by an adult possessing the Certificate. All ATV riders under the age of 14 must be supervised by an adult.

There are those who see the desert as nothing more than a wasteland to be exploited and then there are those who appreciate the beauty of the desert. ORVs and ATVs can be used to gain access to remote locations or they can be used as a source of recreation in and of themselves. When a machine is pushed to extremes accidents are going to happen and the outcome is often life-changing or potentially deadly.

Fatal Accident at Banshee Hill, Halloween Weekend '16
Not sure what the stats would look like for accidents resulting in injury or death at Dumont Dunes and I doubt that there are official records.
On Saturday 10/29/2016 around 11:30 am, Gustavo Aranda Castaneda a 32 year-old resident of Riverside, CA was riding his Banshee up Banshee Hill at Dumont Dunes. He wasn't able to stop before reaching the top and rode off of a 60-70 foot dropoff. Gustavo, also known as "Gus", was wearing a helmet and was ejected from the quad. Medics arrived and performed CPR, but unfortunately he did not make it. He was pronounced dead on scene at 12:43 pm.

ATV accident highlights off-road vehicle safety concerns
There are those who say that any parent who allows a child under fourteen to ride on a motorized vehicle should be charged with child endangerment. I can't say that's unreasonable.
