FOMO Fueling Teen Social Media Addiction
Checking social media accounts isn't that much different from checking the answering machine or staying near the phone in order not to miss a call in the old days. Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) isn't anything new and teens have always wanted not to be excluded by peers. I recall yelling at my brother to not stay on the phone too long just in case one of my friends called. You could say that I was obsessed with the phone and that I had an acute case of FOMO and this wasn't too many years ago.

San Diego Unified School District expands restorative justice program
Not a lot of details, but somehow it's supposed to reduce expulsions and suspensions.

To Find Out Why Schools Are Sending In Cops To Bust Third Graders, Ask The Local Prosecutor :smack:
This might be the most dysfunctional story of this kind yet! We hear about innocent comments being taken out of context all the time, but this is the first time I've heard of a prosecutor's office actually mandating that all offenses, even minor ones, be referred to law enforcement. When bureaucracies are involved sometimes it's hard to assign blame since the source of the problem is often hiding behind people forced to comply with the ridiculous demands of the idiots who are actually in charge.
Indeed, the county prosecutor's office had called a May meeting and indicated that pretty much every minor disciplinary issue was to be handled by law enforcement. Prior to this meeting, the Memorandum of Agreement between the district and law enforcement had only stipulated that "serious" violations -- like weapons, drugs or sexual misconduct -- were to be handled by police officers.

Here's Why The U.S. School System Is Broken
This is a very unfocused and contradictory discussion. There are states that perform poorly (South Dakota, Nebraska, etc.) and there are those that perform quite well (Delaware, California, etc.). In fact, high-performing states rank pretty high compared to other countries around the world. As far as diagnosing the problems with public education in the USA, the following comment does a much better job than does the video:
Emphasis on testing over teaching.
Money is determined by local estate taxes so wealthy districts get more money while poor districts get little.
Regulations and standards being decided by lawyers and politicians instead of educators.
Teaching is a low-pay, low-respect position that demands many personal hours and funds to be done well.
America's love of sports diverts funds and donations from pedagogy to sports teams and stadiums.
Teachers often have to pay out of pocket for materials instead of having it paid by district funds.
A general lack of respect for education and educators.

wildrose: Educational technology has potential, but for every useful gadget, website, or software title, there are dozens of useless pieces of crap floating around. Remember crap floats to the top of the barrel more so than does the cream. Glitter and shine captivates the tiny mind and that's been the way things have gone in education for the last few decades.

The Unsolvable Math Problem:
A student mistook examples of unsolved math problems for a homework assignment and solved them.

Although this particular story (which actually happened over a half century ago) is true, it is a true anomaly and appealing because of the wish-fulfillment aspects of the story and not because it reflects any underlying truth other than that SOMETIMES PEOPLE GET LUCKY!
This legend about the "unsolvable math problem" combines one of the ultimate academic wish-fulfillment fantasies — a student not only proves himself the smartest one in his class, but also bests his professor and every other scholar in his field of study — with a "positive thinking" motif which turns up in other urban legends: when people are free to pursue goals unfettered by presumed limitations on what they can accomplish, they just may manage some extraordinary feats through the combined application of native talent and hard work.

Is Computer Programming Hard to Learn ?
"It should be mandatory to be a citizen on this planet, to read and write code." - will.i.am
:pac:
And I agree. To be able to code is to be able to think clearly and precisely. Not to be mean, but it's true that very few people in the general population can think worth a darn!

Lesson 1 - Python Programming (Automate the Boring Stuff with Python)
Python is a great first language to learn. This video is actually the first in a series which covers the material in a book about programming in Python intended for absolute beginners.
