mrgreen: It's obvious that they're throwing around misleading and false statistics in that news clip. If there's one thing I've learned in this forum and else where in the last several years, it's that news organizations play fast and loose with statistics and that you really have to pay attention and do some reality testing anytime they start throwing stats around or talking about research which may or may not be relevant or may or may not even be credible. It's the old buyer beware thing only there's no consumer protections when it comes to news.

Teaching kids to slow down, so they can speed up
This could be a good idea as long as not too much time is spent on it.

Local Teacher's 101 Ways To Deal With Stress Goes Viral
The typical list of ways to reduce stress, but it got popular on Twitter. They're calling it viral, but with only 30k likes and 27k retweets, I think it's far short of viral since that usually requires a million views, retweets, likes, etc. depending on the platform. It definitely got moderately popular, but it seems strange that this is a news item. Must have been a slow news day...

Education and accelerated change: The imperative for design learning
This is were the authors of the article are generally correct, but nothing said here is anything but completely obvious.
The truth is that we can no longer afford to focus on graduating learners armed only with predetermined skills and (already existing) knowledge. The workforce is becoming far too global, too digital, and increasingly too self-employed. We must instead refocus on cultivating creativity, to include not only problem solving, but also problem finding and problem framing.

Here's where they're wrong and this shows a fundamental failure to understand where we are as a society.
When anything mentally routine or predictable can be reduced to an algorithm, it signals the need for a shift in our learning systems around adapting to change. As we move from the Information Era into the Augmented Era, demand is growing for a profound shift of focus at all levels of formal education (i.e., K-12, higher education, and workforce development).

SOCIETY AS A WHOLE HAS NOT YET ENTERED THE INFORMATION AGE! Corporations are still fighting to keep us in the Industrial Age (mostly by defending old intellectual property systems - copyright, trademark, patent - but also by attempting to dominate discourse through censorship as we see with efforts by YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter to silence people with disruptive points of view). Most individuals still think from an Industrial Age perspective. We simply have not yet entered the Information Age. This idea of the "augmented age" is just a small part of what the Information Age is all about. A necessary part of the Information Age is that we develop ways of dealing with huge amounts of information. That's where data mining, machine learning, and various forms of artificial intelligence come to play. This article is based on an incorrect set of assumptions and is mostly geared towards selling what they call "design thinking" which is nothing but some entrepreneur's idea of a way to take advantage of gullible idiots (who have no clue what the Information Age is really all about ) and make money off them.

cactuspete: Business as usual. As most of you know, I'm a retired school teacher and I'm quite aware of technology scams and the way educational leaders are easily misled by salespeople. They're looking for an easy way to look good to the public and they are way too eager to buy into some sales pitch. I'd say that GULLIBLE IDIOTS is a fair way to describe most people in leadership positions when it comes to public schools.

After School SATAN CLUB Approved For Oregon Elementary School!
:thumb:
Religious freedom and separation of church of state are great concepts and then there are those who want to remind us of the true meaning of Satanism...
As a pagan and former LaVeyan Satanist, I think this is a great idea. Lucifer, the lightbearer, is simply a symbol of knowledge and enlightenment.

Students Fly As School Bus Flips
School districts may soon be required to install seatbelts in all school buses. Not a cheap proposition.

Why Computer Science Education in K-12 Settings Is Becoming Increasingly Essential
With so many programming languages being used professionally, it's hard to imagine how to best approach computer science education, but...
Computer science educators were ecstatic when, in January of this year, President Barack Obama announced the CS for All initiative in his State of the Union address. This initiative calls for over $4 billion in funding to greatly expand access to K-12 CS education, including funds for teacher training and curriculum development.

Patriot Day my ass! I'm sure there was no discussion whatsoever about what the USA did to motivate the attacks. The truth is far too offensive to be discussed in public schools.

Did the 9/11 Memorial go something like this?

2001 Clear Channel memorandum - Songs Banned After 9/11
Here's just a few:
AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
Blue Oyster Cult - Burning For You
The Clash - Rock The Casbah
Drowning Pool - Bodies
Foo Fighters - Learn To Fly
John Lennon - Imagine
Steve Miller Band - Jet Airliner
Tom Petty - Free Fallin
Queen - Another One Bits The Dust
Savage Garden - Crash and Burn
System of a Down - Chop Suey
Talking Heads - Burning Down The House
The Zombies - She's Not There

How Sacramento teen’s peanut allergy death impacted CA
It's hard to imagine surviving in modern society with a peanut allergy. Peanuts are in one way or another in almost everything.
