Very observant Shadylady: I did reread his post before I submitted mine and realized I hadn't taken the 2nd sentence into consideration but didn't think it was worth changing my answer. When I went to school I felt most of what I was being taught was a waste of time even back then. Other than dropping out I didn't have any other option but to attend a public school. My parents never helped me with my homework because they were too busy working. Most of what I learned I learned on my own and have always attributed it to be in spite of public schooling, not because of it. When you think about it, homework is primarily home schooling; which I'd be willing to bet that a lot of those top students did a lot of. Common Core is retarded and should be abolished. Wait until those kids grow up and start attending the universities Cactuspete mentioned. It's going to be a disaster!

Unfortunately, U-shaped curves are pretty common in education. So many students are apathetic, especially those coming from dysfunctional situations. All students in public schools have the opportunity to learn, but many work hard to do anything but learn while in school. It's not our school system that's broken. It's our culture that is seriously broken. Many rich parents pull their kids out of public school simply because they don't want their children to associate with kids who have bad attitudes. The teachers at private schools have it easy. All they have to do is teach. In public schools teachers work hard to earn their pay and do much more than teach. The only thing that makes private schools more successful than public schools is the clintele. If private schools had to deal with the same children and the same red tape and regulations, they would not be any better than public schools and many aren't even without all that weighing them down.

I can identify with, and I appreciate that you understand that schools are being weighed down by red tape and regulations. I hope that DeVoss will do away with much of that along with Common Core; which is worse than the previous concept, which seemed to me to consist of making everyone wait and learn at the pace of the slowest child so as not to leave them behind.

I had a chance to watch DeVos' speech to Department of Education employees last night and it was a very gracious speech, but she didn't discuss her agenda at all. She basically just expressed the hope that everyone will be able to work together and be open to change. At this point I have a let's just wait and see attitude. If she pushes something I think is bad for education I'll be the first to complain, but until then I'll just hope for the best. After all, she may actually have good intentions. I know most people I've talked to think she intends to defund public education and put all the money in the pockets of her rich friends, but it's unfair to assume that's what she actually wants. There might be more to her than we realize. I know that's probably overly optimistic, but you never know.

Parents say children are scarred over porn mistake :eek2: :roll2:
Talk about melodramatic over-reactions. This lady claims that all the kids were shocked and that they closed their eyes. Bullshit. Most of the kids were probably delighted. As for what went wrong, it's hard to say. Did the teacher use the iPad to view porn and somehow forget that he had done so before plugging the iPad in? Probably not. Did a student use the iPad to view porn at some point? Quite possibly. Could the iPad be infected with a virus that accesses a porn website? Also possible. An internal investigation will probably uncover what happened and teachers will probably be cautioned to turn on iPads and view the screens before plugging them into large classroom monitors.

CactusHugger: What I want to know is was the porn just a nude or did it actually depict a sexual act? Was it something hardcore or was it just some weak erotic art? Either way it's nothing to get all hot and bothered over. I think this is what they call a FIRST WORLD PROBLEM.

Parents suing over school's playground turf
No matter what schools do, someone is going to whine about something. It's impossible to keep everyone happy all the time and those who aren't happy file lawsuits!
