TJUSD Board Meeting - September 14, 2017
Posted: Fri Sep 15, 2017 2:02 pm
This meeting lasted a little over an hour and attendance was pretty low with only two individuals in the audience staying for the entire meeting. Both were employees. A few other people were present for part of the meeting and they were all either employees or students. SCHOOL INFO: http://www.blackturtle.us/TTA/
Meeting highlights:
1) Student Representative - Reported to the board regarding things happening at the high school including sports events, pep rallies, dance events, a new welding shop, and an upgraded science room.
2) Trona Teachers Association - Requested that teachers working as ticket takers at sports events be provided with information about price of admission, policies regarding free admission, etc. This request was made after a teacher worked as a ticket taker and was provided with no info regarding these things. Also a problem with late arrival of classroom supplies such as workbooks was mentioned. Several teachers ordered materials before the end of the the last school year and still haven’t received these items and we are now at the end of the fourth week of instruction.
3) Superintendent’s Report - The superintendent reported regarding a conference he attended in Sacramento regarding charter schools and stated that we received about $250,000 from the charter (California STEAM San Bernardino) for the 2016-2017 school year. Our charter has an enrollment of 1300 students.
4) CIF Rules - A rule regarding the use of running clocks was eliminated. Such rules exist in order to minimize lopsided scores. Recently the Trona HS football team won by a margin of 70-something to zero. The football coach was present and said that he did his best to keep from “running up the score.”
5) Avalon Football Trip - The HS football team has a trip to Avalon next week to play a game against the football team there. The team will travel to Avalon Thursday, play the game Friday, and return Saturday. The trip involves a boat ride to Santa Catalina Island, where the city of Avalon is located. (This week the HS football team is playing up in Mammoth.)
6) Entrepreneur Club - A student reported regarding opening a student store. He stated that the Entrepreneur Club has a goal of opening the student store in October and explained that they plan on selling a number of items including t-shirts.
7) Homecoming Football Game - The game this year will be played on October 13. There was some difficulty scheduling a team for Homecoming this year. Originally Big Pine was going to be the guest team, but they cancelled their football program and so Fraiser Mountain will be the guest team instead.
8) Two new employees were approved by the school board. A business clerk was approved (4-1) and a sophomore concessions manager was also approved (5-0).
9) Additionally, before closed session Skylar McCullar was sworn in as the replacement board member. Tricia Funke recently resigned and so a new board member had to be selected. Last Thursday candidates were publicly interviewed. The list of candidates included Bobby Pittman, Skylar McCullar, Priscilla Benadon, Chris Darling, and Nadine Davis.
10) The next two regular monthly board meetings will not be held on the second Thursday of the month. In October the date is the nineteenth and in November the date is the eighth.
