TJUSD Board Meeting - November 08, 2017

Postby blackturtle.us » Wed Nov 08, 2017 8:20 pm

This board meeting may have set a record for being the shortest regular monthly TJUSD school board meeting... quite possibly ever! It lasted less than a half hour. Also there were more community members present for the meeting than is usually the case. The meeting being so short, there aren't a lot of highlights to share, but here are a few items.

DISTRICT INFO: http://www.blackturtle.us/TTA/

1) Trona Teachers Association Report - Information regarding a recent meeting with onPoint was provided to the board. The district has hired onPoint to install, maintain, and provide training for the modernization of classrooms at the elementary and high school sites. There have been issues encountered with the proper functioning of the equipment and the quality of the training provided by onPoint. A company representative met with elementary teachers last week and received feedback regarding the work his company has done. This meeting was characterized as tentatively positive pending the resolution of the issues listed by teachers over the course of the next couple months.

2) Trona Classified Employees Association - The district has reached an agreement with the classified union for a two year contract deal. The county is currently reviewing the agreement.

3) Grand Re-Opening of High School Library and science classroom - Modernization work has been completed and a re-opening even will be held Monday, November 13, at four in the afternoon. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held and refreshments will be served.

4) The district is in the middle of an annual full audit. County officials have spent time helping maintenance and financial personnel regarding the bid process.

5) Winter Coaches - Three basketball coaches were approved and a no vote occurred for a fourth candidate.

FUTURE MEETINGS:
December 12 - Brown Act training for school board members
December 14 - Next regular monthly meeting.

The HS library re-opening sounds interesting. I'd like to hear what has been done to the library to make it more modern. Did they install teleconferencing equipment or a 3D printer or what?

ergot: The teacher probably should have watched his words, but the kid most definitely deserved a stern lecture. There was no threat made against the lady's son, just a prediction based on the kid's behavior. I'd say that the prediction was extremely reasonable given the kid's attitude. The lady should be supporting the teacher, but it's no surprise she isn't since the apple doesn't fall far from the tree as they say.

Suit: Predator lured girl away during school hours
For the computer access to online chat I don't see how the school could be responsible. That would be beyond what a school could reasonably be expected to do. But for allowing her to leave campus unsupervised. That does seem like negligence.

tronagirl: Agreed. Kids can get away with a lot while using school computers and it's almost impossible for a school to catch every little rule a kid breaks while using computers at school. Kids can get around firewalls and filters with all sorts of tricks and they're really good at hiding what's on their screen when the teacher walks by. It's so easy for kids to do that kind of thing. HOWEVER, allowing a kid to leave campus? There's no excuse for that. The school really dropped the ball on that one and someone will probably lose their job as a result. Probably that person has already been terminated by now.

wildrose: There are exceptions, but for the most part most people freshly out of high school don't know anywhere near as much as they should. Students need to be held more accountable. They should be required to pass a comprehensive test demonstrating that they've mastered a wide assortment of skills and concepts and that they have retained a high portion of the information presented to them during their years in public school. Failure to pass the test should result in penalties. Our system here in the USA is backwards. It makes no sense to hold teachers accountable for the learning of students. That is a recipe for disaster. Put the focus on students and make it clear to them every step of the way that it is their responsibility to work hard and learn what is being presented!

panamint_patty: Most kids put almost no effort into learning. How is it fair to hold teachers accountable for lack their of effort? Motivating kids is the job of parents! It would make more sense to penalize parents for a student's lack of academic progress, than to penalize teachers for for students' lack of progress. Our whole system has gone to hell!
