Postby blackturtle.us » Fri Feb 09, 2018 11:43 am

The board meeting this evening lasted about an hour. Early in the meeting several students were present (along with family members) for the presentation of awards. Soon after the awards were presented over half of those present left, leaving only board members and school employees.

Superintendent’s Report:
A) School safety - The district is working with the sheriff department of San Bernardino County to put together an active shooter training session. Efforts are being made to include the police department from Ridgecrest and the sheriff department from Kern County since both are likely to be involved in the case of an actual active shooter event.
B) 25 Year Old Report - A report was found from the 1990s which looked into sinking and settling of buildings. It was strongly suggested that it is time for a new study since further sinking and settling appears to have occurred.
C) High School Principal - Mentor program outlined for school board. It was explained that the program would help in a number of ways. For instance, it would help students moving from the elementary site to the high school site to cope with the transition. It would provide motivation for older students to serve as role models and to keep their own grades up. Also it would provide juniors and seniors with an opportunity to earn money. The high school principal also explained how the program would be monitored to make sure that students are doing what the program requires.
D) LCAP Community Meeting - A community meeting will be held on February 13th at 5:30 pm in the high school library. The superintendent invited community members to share school improvement ideas and that sort of thing.
2) Maintenance Report: A list of projects planned for the summer was shared with the school board. Items included such things a modernizing classrooms, repairing roofs, replacing a fire alarm system, maintaining parking area in front of high school, upgrading weight room equipment, improving security of gates and entry points, etc. A projected cost of over $572K was estimated, although the cost of several project was not known and so the actual total could be substantially higher.
3) Teachers Contract - Negotiations between the district and the local teachers’ union are set to proceed in the near future. Items to be discussed include Teaching Hours and Adjunct Duties, Health and Welfare, Compensation, and Leaves.
4) Employment and various other routine items on agenda all approved.
5) 2018-2019 Calendar - The board approved the proposed calendar.
NEXT REGULAR BOARD MEETING: March 08

Homework assignment includes racist questions
Nothing racist to see here folks. The questions were poorly worded and may have reflected some kind of racial stereotype, but it is stupidly hyperbolic to call them racist. Having said that, it is doubtful that the textbook being used included some of the language used in the assignment and so the teacher should have used language consistent with that contained in the textbook. In our politically correct world, textbooks tend to be squeaky clean when it comes to racial stereotypes. Having said that, if the textbooks used the same terms included in the assignment, then the teacher cannot be criticized. However, even if the teacher used the terms on her (or his) own, it's still the case that she (or he) didn't actually do anything seriously inappropriate although apparently the words caused a few special snowflakes to become upset.

Allergy advocates spark 'Peter Rabbit' boycott
I'm stuck in the middle of this one. I get the humor and I understand the outrage. The movie is targeted to a child audience. Making a joke of targeting people with allergies definitely sends the wrong message and could potentially result in some tragic situations. Often adults lack the brainpower to put things into proper perspective and this is even more true of children.

Peter Rabbit 'food bullying': Film studio apologises over scene showing animals pelting allergic man with blackberries
Blackberry allergy? I didn't know there was such a thing. I've heard of being allergic to nuts, milk, wheat, etc., but not blackberries.
Mocking allergic disease shows a complete lack of understanding of the seriousness of allergy and trivialises the challenges faced by those with this condition.

Lesbian Teacher FIRED
Awesome rant! Hypocrisy exposed. I think the teacher could win a lawsuit for wrongful termination and discrimination without any doubt. Just the two excerpts from Leviticus would be enough to show that there is no Biblical support for firing the teacher, and the Catholic Church, if I'm not mistaken, derives its beliefs from the Bible, right?

What more can be done to keep students safe?
So what is it that has caused the increase in the number of these active shooter events? Is it video game violence or movie violence? Is it poor parenting? Is it bullying or a permissive society? There must be a reason in there somewhere!

A lot can be done to prevent school shootings, but people have to do something!

twister: A lot can be done to prevent school shootings, but some measures could be less than productive. The mental health angle can actually be very unhealthy, for instance. If there's some kid everyone thinks might be a potential shooter and mental health workers try to intervene, it's possible that the kid will be like WTF and actually be upset and even traumatized that others think of him like that. I'm just saying that a lot of times people mean well, but wind up making things worse.

A LOT OF TIMES PEOPLE MEAN WELL, BUT WIND UP MAKING THINGS WORSE. Probably more often than not that's very true. In fact, I'm willing to bet that a careful analysis of events and reactions to events since Columbine would reveal how and why the problem has continued to get worse and worse. Knee jerk reactions tend to be counter-productive.

Watters' Words: Lies and warning signs
Mass shootings are bad, but misinformation about mass shootings is even worse. This guy makes a lot of great points. Careful analysis of the facts and a correct understanding of the facts provides the best way forwards to an effective response. Pushing an agenda and knee jerk reactions just make things worse.
