TJUSD Board Meeting - March 08, 2018

Postby blackturtle.us » Fri Mar 09, 2018 9:13 pm

Lots of people were present at the beginning of the meeting for student awards, but most people left after that. Here are the highlights:

1) Trona Teachers Association - Two teachers were on hand to share info about recent events with the school board. Topics included recent free dental services for elementary students provided by Loma Linda School of Dentistry, lice issues at the elementary school, a "coin war" to raise money for a medical charity, and info about the 4th/5th grade Odyssey of the Mind team's recent success.
2) Superintendent's Report - The superintendent spoke at length about plans the school has for increasing school security. In particular a team from the San Bernardino County Sheriff will inspect both campuses and make recommendations for ways that school security can be enhanced. Also they will train staff on how to handle active shooter situations. Additionally, a question was raised about pedestrians traveling from the apartments to Telescope Street through school property. The superintendent indicated that this route will be closed. A large number of specific items were discussed related to school security with some planned for implementation in the near future and others which will require further research.
3) A question about royalties was raised by a board member. Usually the amount received during the previous month is posted in the board agenda, but this month the check came late and so the amount was not included.
4) A couple substitute paraprofessionals and a substitute bus drive were hired and approved by the board.
5) Two teachers to retire: Cathy Heseman (5th grade) and Mike Steinke (high school math). Mike Steinke is the most senior teacher on staff, having served 43 years with the district. Cathy Heseman has served in a number of capacities with the district. The last thirteen years she has served as a teacher and before that she worked for something like 23 years in other positions. Both will retire in June.
6) Free Breakfast Program - The county is requiring documentation for this program and the board approved the necessary paperwork to be provided to the county as requested. (This was just red tape behind the scenes stuff. There was no discussion regarding changing anything about the Free Breakfast Program.)

中国高中生vs.西方高中生Chinese High School Student vs. Western High School Student
Most telling is the response to the test score. A Chinese student gets a 99% and feels bad about not doing better, while a student from the USA rejoices over a 60% (lowest passing grade possible). To make matters worse, the test the Chinese student took is many times more difficult than the one administered to the student from the USA. One can only wonder how long it will be before we fall so far behind that it will become impossible for us to catch up.

Key & Peele - Substitute Teacher Pt. 2
Back with a part two to this classic skit! Not quite as good as the first one, but the part about the chess/chest club was pretty funny!

Little Johnny Jokes - Teacher Asks Little Johnny To Use The Word Contagious
It's hard to say what would happen if a little boy actually said something like this in class, but...

wildrose: Obviously the video you posted exaggerates the differences between Chinese and American students, but there is a lot of truth there. Students here need to do a better job competing with students from other countries. If our country loses its competitive edge our standard of living will decline rather rapidly. I don't think many people realize what's at stake here. We can't take our place in the world for granted. There are plenty of other countries that would be more than happy to attain the status of most powerful nation.

shadylady: Great joke! Made my day! A little inappropriate for kids, but kids say worse stuff all the time and so no harm done as far as I'm concerned. If it puts a smile on someone's face, then it can't be all bad. That's my motto!

CrustyOldFart: Students every now and then make funny mispronunciations in which an appropriate word comes out sounding like an inapproprite word. One of the most common examples is ORGASM instead of ORGANISM. Another is BOOBS instead of BOOTS and yet another is when someone with a valley girl accent says cotton balls, it often sounds like cock-n balls.

MISPRONUNCIATIONS: Other words that I imagine could easily get twisted around include adobe as 'a doobie', orgasmic instead of organic, grassy ass instead of gracias, or mental pause for menopause. Mustard as must-turd also has potential although I don't know if anyone has ever actually made that mistake!

Teacher under fire for feeding puppy to snapping turtle in classroom
PETA disapproves, therefore I APPROVE!
The teacher probably shouldn't have done anything like this unless parents had signed some kind of permission slip, but even at that snapping turtles gotta eat and nature can be cruel and so I'm not going to condemn this guy and I might even praise him for sharing his interest in snapping turtles with students.

tronagirl: Exaggeration yes, but as you say we can't take our position in the world for granted. Parents fail to sufficiently motivate students and teahers can only do so much with unmotivated students. Better curriculum would help, but there are only so many hours in a day. Teachers can't do everything without serious support and getting the best and brightest to go into teaching requires serious salaries, which are severely lacking even in the highest paid states.
