A middle school teacher is rewarded for going above & beyond with a bus full of surprises
Must be a great guy to get such a wonderful award, but it's not clear what he does different from any other teacher.

Jordan Peterson - How To Be a Good Teacher
The best predictors of success in the classroom are intelligence and conscientiousness, but that's true in most professions.

In some primitive cultures eating their remains was a way of honoring the dead. The prankster was just trying to revive an old tradition. What's wrong with that?

recluse: Few teachers push their beliefs on their students. Conservatives often claim that this is so, but most teachers encourage students to think for themselves. No teacher I've ever talked to wants to pressure students into buying into some set agenda. The world is dynamic and constantly changing and so it's necessary for students to be free thinkers who can weigh evidence and make decisions on their own and not according to some kind of political litmus test.

MojaveMike made a comment about lawsuits being filed by opportunistic individuals in another thread. Whether we're talking the park service or public schools, often the biggest worry those running such institutions have is frivolous lawsuits. There are so many picky laws and so many individuals looking for the slightest excuse to file lawsuits that sometimes you wonder why the legal system even allows such ridiculousness. In the end it harms everyone, but irresponsible people don't care about the good of society. They just want to line their pockets with some quick, easy cash.

wildrose: The sad thing is that public agencies will often offer a settlement to those who file a lawsuit instead of attempting to hold those individuals accountable for their actions. Stiff penalties should be applied to those who file frivolous lawsuits, but our legal system lacks the backbone to make opportunistic individuals pay for their dishonesty and irresponsibility.

A Dark Consensus About Screens and Kids Begins to Emerge in Silicon Valley
People who develop smartphones and other digital devices realize that it's not a good idea to allow children to use them on a regular basis. Too much screen time can be detrimental to the healthy cognitive and physical development of a child. Here is a good set of rules that parents who understand the dangers of too much screen time have for their kids:
....five children and 12 tech rules. They include: no phones until the summer before high school, no screens in bedrooms, network-level content blocking, no social media until age 13, no iPads at all and screen time schedules enforced by Google Wifi that he controls from his phone. Bad behavior? The child goes offline for 24 hours.

More examples:
Tim Cook, the C.E.O. of Apple, said earlier this year that he would not let his nephew join social networks. Bill Gates banned cellphones until his children were teenagers, and Melinda Gates wrote that she wished they had waited even longer. Steve Jobs would not let his young children near iPads.

The nightmare videos of childrens' YouTube — and what's wrong with the internet today
I'd say that the content available on YouTube is twenty percent positive, eighty percent neutral, and ten percent negative. There is enough negative stuff that children under eight or so should not be allowed to use YouTube without adult supervision.
