When you focus on the lowest ten percent of the population, that's what everyone else becomes. It's high time that we focus on the needs of the top two-thirds and provide separate facilities for the bottom third. That's the only kind of reform that will make a real difference. Anything else is just throwing money away.

But we NEED to be more inclusive!

AMEN!
If all schools followed that policy, the quality of education would be improved one-thousand percent. Instead we accommodate dysfunction at every opportunity, thereby dooming all students to mediocrity!

I think we also need to focus on the intellectually gifted as well as the disadvantaged. Holding them back by dumbing down, leads to withdrawal and opens the door for mischief the same as teaching someone so far above their level that they can not comprehend...

And what's up with remodeling our public library? Why is there no money for public wifi and ridiculous charges for overdue, stupid, useless media; yet we have money to expand the building and uselessly remodel the inside of the existing facility?

Culver City Holds Town Hall About School Safety In Somber Wake Of Columbine Massacre
It's hard to feel safe anywhere you go. There have been shootings in churches, stores, stadiums, sports arenas, subways, etc. Preventing mass shootings is not a simple matter since there are multiple methods and motivations relevant to each mass shooting situation. Most interventions are far to simple-minded to have any real impact, but for some people doing something is better than doing nothing. However, often that is not the case since it is very common for interventions to only make things worse.

Schools can only be so safe. The same goes for other places where people congregate. Rather than being obsessed with safety, we should be obsessed with treating people right. Happy people don't kill people or at least that's an assumption that I'm willing to make.

School safety is important, but kids should not be made to feel like they're in prison while at school. It could even be the case that kids who feel like their being treated like prisoners are more likely to turn to violence to get even with people they perceive as having done them wrong. Also reacting to kids who are seen as possible threats could turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Facebook Taking Over School System
Individualized learning is a good thing, but not something that should be done for more than a couple hours a day. It sounds like this program took the idea to an extreme and all things in moderation is generally a good rule to follow most of the time.

Traditional teaching methods are time-tested and true. About seventy-five percent of the school day should be spent in traditional mode. The rest of the time individualized learning and other methods can be used, but stick to what works most of the time and maybe supplement that with other approaches. That's the formula for success as far as I'm concerned.

Socialization at school is important. Classroom discussions are important. Students need to learn to listen to each other and to express themselves. Individualized learning should occupy only a very small portion of the school day.

Student suspended after school confrontation
Conflicts at a high school can be difficult to sort out. Almost always the students are at fault in situations like this, but you never know.
