The board meeting for July 27, 2020 began twenty minutes late. At one point thirty people were watching the livestream, although most of the time the number was in the twenties. The meeting lasted about one hour.

SUPT REPORT: High school graduation this week on July 31st. The event will be streamed live.
MAINTENANCE: On going work.
PRINCIPAL: Excited about HS graduation. There will be ten to fifteen minute delay on the live broadcast. The event is by invitation only. It will not be open to the general public.
DISCUSSION ON REOPENING SCHOOL: A teacher expressed opinion that younger children, K-3, should be back to regular classroom ASAP. Another teacher said that he would feel comfortable on campus. Principal gave a presentation outlining how classes will be conducted online at beginning of school year. Live online classes will be held Tuesday through Friday. Work will be available for Mondays, but it will not involve live interaction between teachers and students. Mondays will primarily be a day for teachers to prepare video lessons, etc. Students will be held accountable for completing work and grades will be given and attendance taken. Meal distribution will continue with lunch and breakfast available for pick up. Also Hotspots and other equipment will be available for students who need these items. District committed to engaging in distance learning until September 10th. At that point the district will assess the situation and plan accordingly. Online classes will start on August 13th as planned. There will be no delay on the beginning of school. The district will apply for a waiver to allow for in person for grades K-3, but at this point not a lot is known about criteria for issuance of the waiver. MOU being developed with certificated staff. The district has ordered more Chromebooks plus other supplies such as headphones for students.
APPROVAL OF REOPENING OF SCHOOL PLAN: Approved 5-0
NEXT REGULAR MEETING: August 13

Should students return to school in the fall?
It's complicated, but it's a good idea to play it safe under these very strange circumstances.

"Shut it down now": US health experts call for 2nd coronavirus shutdown
So many people in denial, including the president! How can anyone ignore the numbers? People are way too eager to return to normal life and that will result in loss of life for thousands of people.

tronagirl: And a huge portion of the blame for that should be attributed to all the idiots out in the streets "protesting" and vandalizing and destroying property. There is also no shortage of irresponsible people failing to follow basic guidelines recommending that masks be worn and that people keep their distance from each other. And as usual, those of us who are being responsible pay for the irresponsibility of others. People need to be held accountable, but right now there is almost no accountability. This entire situation is unprecedented.

Teacher’s back-to-school COVID-19 fears
Most schools were closed and doing online learning last spring. The numbers are much higher now than then. What sane person would suggest that we not continue with online learning until the numbers get well below what they were last spring?

Florida School District Releases 'Apocalyptic' Reopening Promo
What's the point of even going to school if it's going to be like this? I think most kids would rather just stay home than put up with all this crap!
Would you walk a mile for me?

camel: While staying home kids can sit how they want and go to the bathroom when they want. With this strict social distancing regime there are so many restrictions that it would drive me crazy! Why go through all that when it's possible to just stay home and get just as much work done?

panamint_patty: The answer to your question is free babysitting. In most households both parents work and when the school doesn't provide free babysitting, it can be a huge inconvenience for parents. The kids are better off at home, but it's the parents who insist otherwise. Lots of people have said that the situation we're in is unprecedented and that's more or less true and as a result there are lots of problems without clear solutions and one way or the other someone gets stuck holding the baby, so to speak.
