SEXXX EDUCATION
This topic is bound to scare the bejesus out of the feeble-minded, but I will kick things off with the perfect song by Beck:

It's Natural
This is an interesting parody of a sex education instructional video. But it begs the question: How far is too far?

It's hard to have an intelligent discussion on this topic with most people. The majority are either authoritarian (thou shalt not) or hedonistic (anything goes) on this topic. Very few people are capable of an adult (reality based) conversation on the topic. Trona is worse than most places in this regards since it takes intelligence to have an adult understanding of the topic. I realized that long ago and so I only visit nowadays, but I did live in Trona for a few years. It's a curiosity and all indicators are that it's deteriorated badly in recent years. Intelligent life is difficult to come by in Trona and the few holdouts should probably move out before property values plunge even lower than they already are. The writing is on the wall.

Authoritarian/Hedonistic is not an either/or relationship. Most people who do not have an adult perspective regarding sex are in what is called a guilt cycle where they vacillate between these two perspectives. They give into their desires and then they feel guilty for having done so. It's an addictive cycle which many religious people fall into. People who have an adult perspective on sex do not have issues with porn. It's people trapped in the guilt cycle who become "addicted" to porn and that's why almost all people who are "addicted" to porn are people with strong religious beliefs. They might not necessarily be regular church goers, but they prescribe to the dogmas of their faith and that limits their understanding of human sexuality. Some people become fixated in the authoritarian mindset for long periods of time and some people become fixated in the hedonistic mindset for long periods of time, but either mindset is unstable although fixation is possible. It should be understood that fixation in either mindset is an obstacle to intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth.

shadylady is right. The question is HOW FAR IS TOO FAR? I actually think the parody video she posted with the duck is quite appropriate for kids. Others might not see it that way, but humor is the best way to break the tension. Sex education should not cause anxiety and humor takes things down a few notches. The youngest ages I could see that video working for would be about ten or so, but maybe even younger. As a parent nothing in that video would bother me.

Sex is always controversial and considering the public health concerns of teenage pregnancy and STDs something has to be done, but it's not easy to satisfy everybody. Add to that all the good-touch-bad-touch junk they push at the lower grades and it's no wonder kids grow up completely confused and bewildered!

wabbit: Add to that all the confusing and contradictory messages contained in movies, video games, and popular music and it's not surprising that sex is a controversial topic. There's a lot of exaggeration too since some people are just looking for something to complain about and fake outrage is a way of getting attention while appearing to be virtuous. That phenomenon has a lot to do with the current state of confusion too.

Separating fact from fiction about the new Washington sex ed curriculum
Does one size fit all when it comes to kids learning about sex? What is age appropriate? Isn't that a matter of preference? There might be an AVERAGE age when kids become curious about various sex-related matters, but that doesn't mean that every child needs to know at the same age.

This is definitely a topic which triggers a lot of people and with all the paranoia surrounding childhood sexuality the topic of sex is avoided at all costs when children are around. This makes it difficult for them to learn about sex in a natural way and as a result dysfunctional attitudes and beliefs develop. Contributing to the problem are all the hypersexual media presentations they randomly are exposed to. As a result they get lots of mixed messages and often wind up confused. It's a recipe for the development of psychological issues which not everyone is capable of sorting out on their own.

cloud: It's widely known that the most religious states are also the states with the biggest pornography problems. Seems there's a lesson to be learned there.
