TJUSD School Board Meeting - December 13, 2012

Postby blackturtle.us » Thu Dec 13, 2012 7:12 pm

It was a fairly short board meeting and although there were several people in attendance during the early part of the meeting, most people left after student awards were passed out. The following are items which were of special interest:

1. Superintendent David Olney swore in Samantha McLean and Sandy Sprouse. Deana Garrison is the new board president. Trisha Funke is the clerk. Sandy Sprouse is the county rep and the date and time for meetings will remain the same (second Thursday of each month).

2. Dawn McMillan presented the First Interim Report for fiscal year 2012-2013, projecting revenue and expenditures for the next three years. She explained that projections are based on conservative estimates of income and that the district is currently deficit spending at a rate of approximately $1.2 million per year.

3. Dawn McMillan presented another report regarding the 2011-2012 Independent Auditor's Report. The only critical finding indicated that the cafeteria was impacting the general fund. She then went on to explain that this is typically the case with small schools due to nutritional requirements, food costs, labor costs, etc.

4. Sex Education Program adopted. Materials will be presented to 6th and 9th graders in compliance with CA state law. (The law actually requires that middle school and high school students receive sex education with the specific grade levels left to the discretion of the school district.) The program is called Positive Prevention Plus and it contains scripted lessons which must be followed verbatim. (If all a teacher is doing is reading a pre-scripted lesson, then it would seem that it would be better to just present the material via videos or computer presentations.)

5. Olney talked briefly about the new marquee. Tom Hopper was available to answer questions regarding this item. He stated that adjustments were still being made to the display settings. (From what I saw when I drove by while leaving the meeting, it appears that the marquee has only one side so that those driving towards the school from the north see just the blank back of the board.)

6. Next Regular Meeting: Thursday, January 10, 2013, 5:00 (closed session)/6:00 (open session) p.m., in the District Board Room.

Local schools react with sadness to tragedy in Connecticut
Hopefully nothing like this happens here.
Trona Joint Unified School District Superintendent and High School Principal David Olney called the shooting horrible. "Words can't express how you feel when you see something like that occur," he said. "What it does is cause us to pause and reflect and make sure that we're doing everything we possibly can to take care of our kids." He said the district regularly conducts drills and is in the process of updating the safety plan. "We make sure that in our safety plan we not only have the drills such as earthquake drills and fire drills, we also have code red drills and making sure that we have a process in place for the kids to practice," Olney said.

Teachers have safety button in class
Looks like companies selling school supplies are already trying to cash in on the tragedy in Connecticut! Looks like the Prison/School Industrial Complex in action to me! It's all about the almighty buck and the selling point is "safety" or the illusion thereof!

Unfortunately, a system like this won't do squat to prevent a tragedy, but it will ensure that there is plenty of video of the event! That way the blood and carnage can be re-watched over and over again on Facebook or YouTube! Oh, yes, and news outlets will make good use of the video clips too. Yes, we simply must install this in all schools. That way we won't miss a single moment of the violence! It's the best kind of reality TV imaginable!

Utah Teachers Receive Free Gun Training
This might sound like a good idea to some, but just wait until a teacher shoots a student (or some students)! More kids are shot as a result of their parents owning guns than are saved by parents armed with guns and the same thing will be true with students and teachers. DUH!!!

As I recall there were a few teachers with anger issues at the school back when I was a kid. I wouldn't have wanted any of them to have a gun in class! It was bad enough as it was!

Mom Makes Boy Hold Sign for Swearing at Teacher
Nowadays it seems like most parents are likely to take the side of their kids even when the kid is clearly in the wrong. It's good to see a parent actually hold a child accountable for being disrespectful!
