Plastic Bag Ban

If it's not about plants, but it is about the natural environment of Death Valley, then this is the place to post your info or question.

President Obama signs legislation banning microbeads
Although I'm in favor of this legislation banning microbeads, I'm against banning plastic bags. The solution with plastic bags is for people just to be responsible. Microbeads are a whole lot more difficult to deal with.

City of Sacramento ban on plastic bags starts today :wtf:
Paper bags will still be available, but the city of Sacramento requires that customers be charge ten cents per bag used!

It's been said before, but it's worth repeating: Reusable bags DO NOT save resources! The material it takes to make disposable plastic bags is so negligible that it literally takes well over one hundred disposable bags to equal the amount of material which goes into a single reusable bag. Most reusable bags will not last one hundred reuses and so it makes more sense from an environmental and a resource point of view to stick with disposable bags.

HELIUM BALLOONS :curse:
Plastic bags aren't nearly as big a problem as are helium balloons. It's rare that I see a plastic bag while hiking in Searles Valley or Panamint Valley. However, I see at least one deflated helium balloon on almost every hike I go on. TODAY I SAW FOUR! I pick them up when I see them and then I dispose of them properly when I return home after the hike. I wish that people would be more careful about allowing helium balloons to float away. I'd ban helium balloons way before I'd even think about banning plastic grocery bags!

HELIUM BALLOONS: You sound like a bit of a party pooper, blackturtle.us. Not that I disagree. You make a good point actually about helium balloons being worse than plastic grocery bags. If it were up to me I'd ban neither. Neither are enough of a problem to warrant a ban.

James Sel: That's the best use for plastic bags I've ever seen. What I don't get is whether this is just a silly internet meme or if there was supposed to be some kind of environmental message.

Newly Discovered Strain Of Bacteria Can Eat Plastic
Rather than resorting to a ban, look into creative ways of solving the problem.

We've made it a few more months and we still have plastic bags! Hopefully the muckity mucks in SACK-ramento don't get their way. You'd think people from SACK-ramento would be on the side of the bags and not against them!
