Mom: Brain eating amoeba killed my daughter
It's common in rivers, lakes, ponds, streams, and hot springs. In fact, it was a supporting element of the theme of Hot Springs Casualties which happens to be a book authored by the guy who runs this forum. Check it out by clicking the "Books" link along the top of the page!

Hot Springs Casualties was the first I heard of Naegleria fowleri. It's a nasty parasite, but the book was a great read!

HOT SPRINGS CASUALTIES: I liked the way the author worked in the bit about Naegleria fowleri and put it in proper pespective. It's just one of the many things that can go wrong in life, but the risk is relatively low compared to so many other potential hazards.

cactuspete: Yes the author did a very nice job working that nasty amoeba into the theme developed in the book. BTW, I enjoyed the entire Black Turtle Series and Hot Springs Casualties was every bit as good as the other six books in the series.

Newly found parasite named after President Obama
Okay so this is slightly off topic, but it is a microorganism and it is a parasite and so it's a closely related topic.

Experts warn of rare brain-eating amoeba in Irma's aftermath
It ain't going away and it's quite common. Watch out for warm water such as in hot springs or stagnant ponds.

Brain Eating Amoeba Attacks Disney World in Orlando!
Old news, but it just goes to show that Naegleria fowleri is capable of popping up in places you wouldn't expect.

Woman dies from brain-eating amoeba after using neti pot
This time the culprit is Balamuthia mandrillaris. This particular brain-eating amoeba was discovered here in California in 1986.

The only way to avoid this parasite is to avoid untreated water!
