School in Trona
There was probably some kind of school in the valley before the school district was established, but this tells a little about the beginnings of the school district.
The Trona School District was established in October 23, 1916, in a one room building, with one teacher. In 1918 a new schoolhouse was built. It was one large room with folding partitions in the center. A large porch ran all around the building. This was built in and used as additional schoolroom space some years later. The schoolhouse was also used for recreational purposes. There was a picture show once a week. AP & CC furnished the building free of charge until the new school was built in 1941, and also furnished supplies for quite a while with the county only having to pay salaries.

Sadly part of the current school facilities are slated for demolition. Although the classrooms haven't been used for years they obviously hold a ton of memories. Many of us spent a lot of time in those classrooms and it's sad that they will be gone. According to the last board report the demolition cost is almost half a million dollars. I for one would rather just see the buildings be allowed to stand for a few more years.

Trona Joint Unified School District
According to a book I have TJUSD covers 1760 square miles. This seems to be all of Panamint Valley, Searles Valley, south to Atolia, and everything west to the Kern County Line. However, I don't think this is true any more since I think people who live near the Kern County Line on the edge of Ridgecrest send their kids to Ridgecrest and so I think the school district boundaries may have been changed since the book was published.

I read somewhere that Silver Valley and Baker are the largest school districts in San Bernardino County and that each has over 3000 square miles of land within their boundaries. Obviously that land is pretty sparcely populated (as is the case with Trona), but it's still a lot of area to cover!

Biggest School Districts in San Bernardino County
Here are some interesting facts about some of the local school districts. I wasn't able to look at each map in the list, but I think these are the largest three in terms of area.
Trona: population 1823, square miles 1621
Silver Valley: population 13,561, square miles 3292
Baker: population 969, square miles 3897

panamint_patty: That's nearly 4 square miles for every person in Baker. I wonder what the school districts in Inyo County are like. For that matter what about Nevada? Or Wyoming for that matter!

THS Commencement Program from 1947
Of particular interest is that there were graduating veterans in this class. These are young men who went off to fight in WWII before finishing high school and then completed their coursework following the war.

These are large files and so I'm not embedding them here.

Nice post blackturtle.us! It would be awesome if someone could put together a full collection of commencement programs along with graduating class pictures for the entire history of THS. It would be a lot of work, but it would be of great value to the community.

The old elementary school now is nothing but history. Only a memory of the old buildings still remains. It was good to get rid of the old buildings and the hazardous materials they contained, but it still seems like something is missing every time I drive by!
