Congressional Rep. John Carter Discovers Encryption; Worries It May One Day Be Used On Computers To Protect Your Data :mad2:
This guy is a Congressional Representative and chairman of Homeland Security Appropriations, but he knows next to nothing about encryption. On top of that, based on his extremely limited knowledge of encryption he's decided that it's a national security threat despite the fact that it's been around for decades. The fact that we have people this brain dead running this country is scary!
Doesn't Rep. Carter have staffers who can point out to him that computer encryption has been around for decades, and it's what keeps all sorts of stuff safe, including his banking details, his credit card purchases, the confidential memos he receives in Congress and much, much more? And yet, he's suddenly discovered encryption and he's decided it's bad because it might, someday, end up on computers?

pcslim: This country is run by idiots. They know next to nothing about any kind of technology and yet they vote on policy all the time that involves technology and how it can be used. Voting doesn't change a thing since it seems that most candidates are equally ignorant. They are good at saying what needs to be said to get elected and that's about it.

Paris: Perfect Excuse To Push For More Surveillance Powers
The same encryption that keeps your online financial transactions private allows communication between anyone... including terrorists. But the same phone lines which allow a grandma to talk to her grandchildren in another state, are also used by terrorists. Extending this logic, the same roads which people use to travel when running errands, going to work, etc. are used by terrorists to get to a location where they unleash their terrorist activities. The point is that we have lots of things which everyone uses which get used by good people and bad people. Do we even talk about banning roads or telephone service? No! So why do fools talk about banning or weakening encryption?

The Broad, Warrantless Reach Of National Security Letters
The government must be accountable to the people and these letters make it possible for the government to conduct business in secret and to bypass all sorts of safeguards which ensure that the rights of citizens are not violated.
