Student under investigation for child porn
Typical stupidity over a stupid video. It's just a freaking video. Law enforcement should stay out of it. Laws need to be amended so that they do not apply to this kind of harmless horseplay! Just think of the hours of police time being wasted on this when they could be dealing with real crime!

mrgreen: Dealing with real crime is dangerous. Someone could get hurt. Law enforcement prefers the kind of investigation that even a pussy could do without any risk. Face it, we're a nation of pussies and the most pussified of all go into law enforcement so they can insert themselves into the lives of others. It's a total scam and a pathetic joke.

Teen commits suicide after being questioned about sexual encounter
School authorities and legal authorities need to handle these situations in a more intelligent and humane manner. The crime they are dealing with is so trivial and yet they turn it into a major issue. How is a young person to make sense of such an overreaction? It is the epitome of stupid and the cognitive dissonance caused by this type of an encounter can have tragic consequences as it did in this case.

Sometimes the ACLU does something right. In the case of a 14-year-old girl from Minnesota who sent a couple naked selfies to a couple boys, the ACLU is defending her and criticizing the state for forcing her to register as a sex offender. The ACLU says that the law should protect young people, rather than penalize them. In addition to the possibility of registration as a sex offender, the girl also faces a possible 7 years in prison and a ten thousand dollar fine!

We're a nation of incredibly immature morons. Images and video containing nudity and sex should not be such a trigger. Normal people don't really care about that sort of thing. Only people raised in a continuous atmosphere of moral panic think the way most Americans do. Decriminalize every aspect of this kind of thing and protect those who have pics and vids floating around of them in the nude or doing something sexual against discrimination. It's almost the opposite of what we're currently doing, but it's the mature and sensible thing to do.

CactusHugger: Interesting point. If employers CAN'T fire someone over this sort of thing, then no one could say that the company's image is affected since it would not be a choice that the employee is retained. Similarly if company's cannot consider ANY of this sort of thing when hiring there would be no need for prying into a job candidate's online personal business. Actually your suggestion is brilliant now that I think about it.

DISCRIMINATION: Anti-discrimination laws should be stretched to include sexting. No one should be fired or not hired because of nude pics from their past. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say that someone who has vids of themselves getting it on with a goat should be protected, but I'd rather protect even goat-fuckers than allow employers to use sexual content in pics or vids as a basis for making employment decisions.

CRINGY INTERNET SAFETY VIDEOS
Well intentioned, but completely stupid public service messages. That's what happens when clueless people decide to give advice.

Teen sexting is an overblown moral panic, according to a new study
Anyone with any common sense already knew that the sexting panic was overblown, but researchers sometimes feel the need to verify since the news media is always busy pushing fake crisis situations.
The data subverts popular conceptions of sexting. About one-third of students reported sexting only once. But the number of students who report sexting “many times” is less than 2%. Compare that to one study’s estimate that 4 out of 5 adults engage in sexting. In other words, while some teens have sexted once, it’s rare to find a serially sexting teen.

Basically, although teens (and adults for that matter) have been known to send r-rated pics, it's actually pretty rare. As for sexually explicit images, that happens even less often.

shadylady: People who get upset about images or videos are idiots. I don't care what it is. People who commit actual crimes should be punished, but owning a picture of something which happened during the commission of a crime should not be an issue. I know some people will have a hissy fit and ask what about this or that. I already know about this or that and none of it should be the business of law enforcement. They absolutely should have more important things to worry about than what images or videos you have in your digital or physical collection!
