panamint_patty: Yes, he is a SENner and after seeing the posts in this thread I'm thinking that I should become a SENer too! Just like the song says, Undoing all the damage makes a lot of sense. Aubrey de Grey is definitely doing a public service by pushing this kind of research forward.

Why Die?
If staying forever young is an alternative, then count me in. Not that I think this is a realistic alternative, but it would be utter insanity to not choose a long, healthy life if that is something which is obtainable.

Why Age? Should We End Aging Forever?
Increased understanding of aging could postpone the progression of degenerative conditions associated with the accumulation of years of life.

Researchers Discover Why Our Metabolism Slows Down As We Age
Aging is complicated and there are dozens of biological processes to take into consideration.
Massive research studies on vitamin supplementation show that otherwise healthy people taking excessive doses of antioxidant vitamins do not reap the benefits of increased lifespan. In fact, as a recent report on deadly vitamins shows, excessive doses of vitamins can be hazardous to your health.

To stay young, kill zombie cells
ApoptoSENS in action! Interesting line of research to be sure!
This anti-ageing phenomenon has been an unexpected twist in the study of senescent cells, a common, non-dividing cell type first described more than five decades ago. When a cell enters senescence — and almost all cells have the potential to do so — it stops producing copies of itself, begins to belch out hundreds of proteins, and cranks up anti-death pathways full blast. A senescent cell is in its twilight: not quite dead, but not dividing as it did at its peak. Now biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies are keen to test drugs — known as senolytics — that kill senescent cells in the hope of rolling back, or at least forestalling, the ravages of age.

Why Do We Age? (Update on the Hallmarks of Aging)
Instead of SEVEN DEADLY SENS, this framework is built around NINE HALLMARKS OF AGING. The more people look at the process of aging from different perspectives, the more likely progress will be made.
1) Genomic Instability
2) Telomere Attrition
3) Epigentic Alterations
4) Loss of Proteostasis
5) Deregulated Nutrient Sensing
6) Mitochondrial Dysfunction
7) Cellular Senescence
8) Stem Cell Exhaustion
9) Altered Intercellular Communication

It's great that people are organizing different ways of looking at the process of aging. I'm sure that it will take lots of therapies, nutraceuticals, and other interventions to significantly increase the healthspan and lifespan of humans. People like Aubrey de Grey may be a little too optimistic about the potential for life extension, but I could see a number like 140 years as quite reasonable given foreseeable advances in medical technology.

How to Cure Aging – During Your Lifetime?
Healthspan is the key. There's no point in living longer unless those extra years are spent in a healthy state!

Dr Aubrey de Grey - Rejuvenating biotech: Why age may soon cease to mean aging
Pretty good talk and talks a bit about why it is reasonable to believe that many people alive now will live healthy lives and attain an age of 1000+ years.
