There seem to be certain cookie cutter patterns that people can follow if they want to make it on YouTube. Watch enough YouTube and concentrate on a wide variety of content types and you'll see what I mean. The biggest pitfall seems to be going too far and doing stupid and crazy things to get attention. Sometimes that works, but more often than not people just get themselves in trouble.

YouTube Cracking Down On Viral Challenges That Could Result In Physical Harm
It seems like YouTube is always cracking down on something. I get that their headquarters are located in the Nanny State, but that doesn't mean that they have to themselves also behave like a bunch of uptight nannies.

A couple years ago the Wall Street Journal tried to knock him off, but PewDiePie is now way more relevant than the Wall Street Journal.

My Video Went Viral. Here's Why
This is the best explanation of the YouTube ecosystem that I've ever seen. It also applies, for the most part, to the popular social media sites.

a2z: I've heard bits and pieces of the discussion on this topic, but this guy put it altogether and he made a lot of sense. Most people who talk about this topic just say more or less that video creators should kiss YouTube's ass and be happy. This guy pointed out some major flaws with the system. Hopefully YouTube listens to him.
