Police Scanning Social Media to Assign "Threat Ratings" to People
This guy doesn't do a great job of distinguishing between viable technologies and schemes based on pseudo-science, but it is the case that law enforcement agencies don't do that great of a job at this sort of thing either. The most interesting project along these lines is written about here:

With the entire Internet and thousands of databases for a brain, the device will be able to respond almost instantaneously to complex questions posed by intelligence analysts. As more and more data is collected—through phone calls, credit card receipts, social networks like Facebook and MySpace, GPS tracks, cell phone geolocation, Internet searches, Amazon book purchases, even E-Z Pass toll records—it may one day be possible to know not just where people are and what they are doing, but what and how they think. The system is so potentially intrusive that at least one researcher has quit, citing concerns over the dangers in placing such a powerful weapon in the hands of a top-secret agency with little accountability. Known as Aquaint, which stands for “Advanced QUestion Answering for INTelligence” [which is run by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA)]...

Snapchat now offers more than just disappearing photos and video :bigger:
Snapchat is fun and now media companies are offering content on it. Considering the popularity of Snapchat with people under 30, this is probably a good idea.

Is someone digitally kidnapping your child's photos? :roll2:
I'm not seeing why this is in any way creepy or something to be even slightly concerned about. This seems like another case of the media trying to get us to obsess over things that aren't even worth caring about.

Public venues are banning selfie sticks—it’s time to stand up for monopod rights
speak softly and carry no stick
I once saw someone attack someone with one of these selfie sticks when person A walked right through person B's selfie stick because the sidewalk area was crowded and person B was blocking traffic with his silly stick. To make a long story short, the confrontation ended when person A grabbed the selfie stick and smashed the camera against a nearby planter and then just walked away after the two exchanged verbal insults.
The telescoping arms, meant to widen the angle, enabling selfie takers to incorporate landscapes and friends in their shots, have been deemed ‘hazardous’ at a growing number of museums, monuments and concert venues.

New "Abused" Emojis For Children :roll2:
The problem with emojis is that they are ambiguous which basically means that someone could intend to convey an innocuous message and someone else might interpret that message in an entirely different manner. Emojis are fun, but pretending that they do much to facilitate communication is wishful thinking.

Why Companies Are Upset Over .Sucks Domains
The way this story is presented is all wrong. Corporations should not be allowed to reserve their own domain name since the point of the domain is to be able to complain about things such as corporations! So the outrage should be that corporations are buying up their names, not that corporations have to spend some small change to do so!
