Panamint Valley Limestone Will Develop a $45 million PVL Lime Plant in Trona, California
I assume this is about the facility at the end of Nadeau Road. Apparently it will be upgraded and developed over the next few years. This facility is supposed to become operational in early 2021. It sounds like there will be lots of big trucks with heavy loads climbing Slate Range Crossing. That doesn't sound like a good thing at all, even if up to thirty-four jobs are created.
The PVL plant will convert high quality limestone rock, quarried from the company's established limestone quarry in the Panamint Valley, into 400 tons per day of high value Quick Lime and Hydrated Lime products used in cement, soil conditioning, water treatment and industrial processes. The PVL lime plant will be the only producer of lime in the state of California, where currently all lime used is imported from out of state. The PVL Lime plant will be located on a site northwest of the existing Searles Valley Minerals and ACE Cogeneration industrial facilities “on a highly disturbed brownfield site,” company officials said.

Interesting info. Like desertrat says, it would be interesting to know how much traffic this will generate. Also will large trucks with heavy loads on Slate Range Crossing pose a safety hazard?

Dangerous levels of algae found in Lake Isabella
If you're planning on heading up to Lake Isabella this week, you might want to reconsider.

2019 Gem-o-Rama canceled
Wow! This is a bad news. Hopefully the Gem-o-Rama will resume in 2020.
The mud-splattered crystals in the desert will remain uncollected this year as Gem-o-Rama, the iconic event that draws people annually to Searles Valley, was been cancelled this year, according to event publicist Jim Fairchild in an email.

More info:
“These earthquakes interrupted minerals production at Searles Valley Minerals, Inc. and damaged neighboring businesses and homes in the Trona community,” Searles Valley stated. “Restoration of minerals production is underway and repairs are ongoing throughout the community. Because of the demands of this recovery activity, Searles Valley Minerals, Inc. is not allowing access to its property on Searles Lake.”

Oh man. They shouldn't have canceled that. They should have just added an earthquake tour to it and printed up a bunch of "Trona Rocks, 7.2, 2019" Tee shirts!
Make Trona great again!

What's New? There will be NO Gem-O-Rama in 2019.
Not sure why they had to close the exhibit hall. They could have at least continued with that part. It might not be as big an event, but vendors probably would have still made some sales.
On August 6 Searles Valley Minerals Inc. notified the Searles Lake Gem & Mineral Society that the strong earthquakes on July 4 and 5 damaged their facilities to such an extent that SVM will not be able to host any Gem-O-Rama gem show activities on their properties during this year’s gem show. The SVM exclusion includes all access to Searles Lake to collect saline minerals, including Searles Lake pink halite, and all tours through their manufacturing facilities. Because these activities form the backbone of the Gem-O-Rama, we believe that we must cancel the 2019 Gem-O-Rama in Trona, California.

Gem-O-Rama - This is a huge opportunity to showcase other local sites of interest. Hikes up to Indian Joe's, various sites in Panamint Valley, maybe something special in Isham Canyon, various local mines, etc. All that could become a focus this year and possibly improve the venue in years to come. The other option would be to hold the event on the same weekend as the local Homecoming Football game and make a big deal about The Pit. It just takes a little creativity. Why are local organizers just rolling over on this one?

Really. Who really cares about finding junk in the mud anyway? There are plenty of other things to do besides that. Take them all up to Ruth Mine or some of the other ones. Even the walk up to the Trona T would be better than that. I like the idea of having it on the same week as the homecoming!

It seems like they're throwing the baby out with the bath water, so to speak. There are lots of interesting things about Trona worth highlighting and going out on the lake is over-rated as far as I'm concerned! It doesn't seem that the people running the event are making much of an effort to make alternative plans!
