How rescued hiker survived days in the wilderness
Sounds like the guy was out of shape and hiked out a bit too far and was desperate for a shortcut on the return trip to his car.

CLMRG conducts numerous search and rescue operations
Recently two teens and an eleven-year-old girl were swept away by the Kern River.
According to KCSO, since 2000, 96 people have perished in the Kern River in Kern County. Kern County statistics show 52 were from the local area, while 39 were from out of town

At least six people have died this summer in the Kern River. 2017 was a big year with fifteen deaths and 2011 was also big with eleven deaths. The total since 1968 is over 300. It may not be the widest, deepest, or most amazing river in the world, but it definitely kills its share of people!
