I understand his resignation. He has spent his life as an Officer in the Amy. There is a certain creed to be an officer. I creed he believed in and didn't live up to. Sure he left the military and then the affair started after the fact. But noway is he not Military "High Ranking Officer" minded.
My point is that he has violated the creed. Military officers are the best of the with the highest standard of conduct , thinking and performance. that is what is reviewed when being promoted. Petraeus' actions had no honor, no integrity, no loyalty, no discipline, no self control, and a lack of judgement. And he knows it, Now that it has been brought to light; he must face it. This starts a self examination and he doesn't like what he sees; hence the resignation.
The timing of all of this with the Benghazi thing going on may or may not have everything to do with the truth and then this is all just a cover up.
