A Record Worth Wilting For: Death Valley Is Hotter Than ...
The hottest place on the planet! Furnace Creek was originally called the Greenland Ranch. (The name was changed in 1933, after the world record was recorded).
Until now. After a yearlong investigation by a team of climate scientists, the World Meteorological Organization, the climate agency of the United Nations, announced this fall that it was throwing out a reading of 136.4 degrees claimed by the city of Al Aziziyah on Sept. 13, 1922. It made official what anyone who has soldiered through a Death Valley summer afternoon here could attest to. There is no place hotter in the world. A 134-degree reading registered on July 10, 1913, at Greenland Ranch here is now the official world record.

Sandshark is kind of new around here. Cut him some slack!
Besides it's a world record. It's worth repeating!

Why is Death Valley so Hot?
The bit about the prevailing winds not aligning with the valleys is interesting. I'd never thought about that part of the explanation before. Otherwise, it's the standard heat sink explanation for why it's so hot around Bad Water. My guess is that it would have been a degree or two hotter at Bad Water on the day that the world heat record was recorded.

Frying an egg Death Valley style
Not sure if she's at Furnace Creek, Bad Water, or Cow Creek, but she's right in the middle there somewhere and that egg does get a little bit cooked!

She got a piece of shell in there. She needs to do a better job cracking eggs. Her one-handed egg cracking skills are seriously lacking!

Death Valley Rangers Urge Tourists to Stop Frying Eggs
I guess the park ranger who posted the egg-frying video set a bad example for people visiting the park!
Officials from Death Valley National Park are urging visitors to stop frying eggs on park grounds after a video demonstration posted on the park's YouTube account went viral and inspired a hot-weather, egg-frying frenzy.
