BallaratBob: Nice call. Many use their supreme powers for evil, but you use yours for the greater good. Well done! But seriously the old thread title didn't really make much sense unless you already knew about the film. Considering all the ruckus over the relocation of this event, I'm surprised that someone didn't already start another thread on the topic by now!

This new course seems like a huge improvement as far as I'm concerned. Sure it lacks the novelty of running from the lowest point in California to a location just below the highest point in this fine state, but the new course is much more centralized which should be a huge logistical advantage. It will be fantastic for Lone Pine!

Death to special events?
Looks like the Badwater Ultra is gone for good unless someone steps in and reverses this latest policy decision which appears to have been recently finalized, but when it comes to public policy nothing's ever actually finalized or is it?
Many County residents and stakeholders in the park were outraged, particularly the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce, which said that the Badwater Ultra Marathon was responsible for contributing $1.2 million to local communities each year.

Badwater 135 Race Route: 2014 Edition
This event doesn't really have anything to do with Badwater or Death Valley anymore and so it should probably just be called either the Lone Pine Ultra or the Owens Valley Ultra or something that has something to do with the current route. I suppose any name change is probably tentative since there's still the potential that the old route could be reestablished. Lots of info about the route, including maps, in the link.

Two Races End at Whitney Portal Now
Lone Pine came out a winner as a result of the brief ban on the race from Furnace Creek to Whitney Portal. The result was a second race which takes runners through Lone Pine and thereby increasing demand for services.
Badwater® Cerro Gordo on January 23-24, 2016 will be based upon the Badwater 135 route used in 2014, but excluding the 33-mile out-and-back section between Keeler and Darwin. It will cover 102 miles (166km) non-stop from Lone Pine, CA to the summit of Horseshoe Meadow (elev. 10,000 feet / 3048m), then across the Owens Valley to a 5,500 foot dirt road ascent to the ghost town of Cerro Gordo, and then, after passing back through Lone Pine, a final dramatic ascent to the highest paved point on Mt. Whitney, CA.

BADWATER 135 (July 28-30)
The regular race will be run as usual this year. In fact, it's next week!
Covering 135 miles (217km) non-stop from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney, CA, the Nutrimatix Badwater® 135 is the most demanding and extreme running race offered anywhere on the planet. The start line is at Badwater, Death Valley, which marks the lowest elevation in North America at 280’ (85m) below sea level. The race finishes at Whitney Portal at 8,300’ (2530m).

sandman: I doubt that the ultramarathons do much to help Lone Pine economically. They might provide a small increase in people staying in motels and eating in restaurants, but the total increase has got to be a drop in the bucket compared to the typical flow of tourists through that town during the summer. I think only 80 or so people participate and even if every participant brings along a couple friends, family members, or crew, we're probably not talking about more than 300 people and that's just not a lot of people. As for Inyo County there might be a bit more of a stimulus from that perspective since the entire race takes place within the county and there's no escaping the need to drop some money somewhere along the way, but even then 300 people is a drop in the bucket.

I heard that several people over the age of sixty participated in the Bad Water Ultramarathon. I haven't bothered looking up whether or not they completed the course, but it's pretty impressive just to have been accepted into the race since applicants are required to prove that they are capable of handling an ultramarathon through previous successful competition in similar events. That being said, I think it's crazy to run or walk ultra distances. In fact, I've heard that exercising to the extreme like that shortens the lifespan. Does anyone else have an opinion regarding extreme physical competitions like this?

Cory Reese to take on Badwater: world's toughest footrace
The race is set to begin on the evening of July 18th. Runners start in three waves and have until July 20th to get to the finish line!
RACE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS: http://www.badwater.com/event/badwater-135/
Badwater is an invitation-only event limited to 100 participants. There’s a lengthy application process, and you have to have a fairly impressive running resume — usually filled with multiple ultramarathon finishes — in order to get into the race.

Madera’s Oswaldo Lopez a favorite to win the Badwater ultramarathon across the California desert
Most of the runners have probably finished the race by now, but here's an interesting pre-race article.
He’s also established himself as one of the best endurance runners ever to compete at Badwater, becoming one of just two runners – the other being Hungary’s Akos Konya – to finish the race in under 24 hours twice. López did it in 2011 (23:41:40) and 2012 (23:32:28); Konya did it in ’07 (23:47:47) and ’08 (23:49:44). In all, just eight runners have finished Badwater in less than a day’s time.
